Posts: 278 May 16 07 6:47 AM	I am scheduled for a C&P exam for tinnitius in 2 weeks. What can I expect at this exam? I have had terrible, non-stop, loud ringing in both ears for over 2 years. I was a jet aircraft mechanic in the USAF for 4 years, 1968-1972. Was constantly exposed to loud jet engine and ground support equipment noise. Have not been subjected to any loud noise environments(work or other) since leaving military. Any insight appreciated.

Posts: 11847 May 16 07 9:08 AM Does not play well With others.	If they ask you what percentage of time hearing protection was available, tell them 100%. If they ask you what percent of the time you wore it, tell them 100%. They jerked me around on that one. I made the mistake of telling them the protection was available 40% of the time, which was the truth. Then they asked me what percent of the time I wore it, I said 40% of the time. They only reported that I wore hearing protection 40% of the time. Didn't bother to report the % of time it was available. Other thing they will look at is whether you have anything in your records where you have complained about the ringing in your ears since 72. They are going to want to know why you are applying now and not 25 years ago. That's how my tinnitus went. BTW, I didn't get it. Posts: 7609 May 16 07 9:34 AM	Basically, there is not a lot they can do to check for tinnitus. However, they will ask questions and some of them will be as mentioned and of what your job was. They may also want to know if there was anything else where you were in a noisy environment. Right or wrong, I have noticed that if someone has hearing loss that they have a better chance of being seen as having tinnitus but if they do not have hearing loss then they have a harder time. Pop

Posts: 278 May 16 07 11:53 AM	Thank you Brianwl and VBNpop for the information. Yes Brianwl, even if hearing protection was used 100% doesn't mean you are safe. Some that I've used the noise damping foam inside was hard, missing and cracked, and futhermore when you are at EOR or engine trim pad with aircraft engines running at 100% you don't even know you have ear protection on cuz its soooooooooo loud!

Posts: 278 May 16 07 12:01 PM	Pop, I had an audiologist doctor test my hearing in Jan. He told me I have a hearing loss within the same frequency range of jet engines(4000 hz or something like that..I don't have the test results in front of me). I sent this test result to the VA along with the ENT doctors report stating I have hearing loss and in his opinion bilateral tinnitus. He also tried me one some prescriptions used for tinnitus but had no effect. He gave me a referral to a supposedly renowned tinnitis specialist but I haven't been to him yet. As far as I know all the would be available to me would be a masking device. The va has me scheduled for an audio exam then an hour later with a C&P doctor. I have not been in an work or other environment of loud noise. Even though its been many years ago tinnitus is the kind of problem that does not present itself within 1 year of separting from the military. I've read on here posts of other members who have been out for 30 years and claimed for tinnitus and was approved. I'll just have to see. Thanks again and Good luck to you all!

Posts: 2000 May 16 07 7:21 PM	I had a c&p for hearing loss (hearing loss was in my military record) and at the c&p the guy asked if I had ringing in my ears and I said all the time. Got s/c hearing loss 0% and s/c tinnitus 10%. I had never heard of tinnitus before.

I would be sure to hammer the fact that I was in a LOUD work area and what you worked on and that you have not been in a loud work area since. Posts: 5820 May 16 07 10:30 PM	I filed for hearing loss in 2005, 24 years after discharge. Denied SC for hearing but was given 10% for tinnitus. I didn't file for tinnitus nor did I know the technical name for it, just had this annoying ring and sound of crickets late at nite. Good luck on the hearing test.

I fully detailed everything in my 21-4138 Statement in Support of Claim and will reiterate them at the exam. imjinscout, its funny what you said about your tinnitus "I never heard of tinnitus before", you've been hearing it for a long time! Posts: 1605 May 18 07 3:44 PM	The examiner might ask if anyone else can hear the noise. In a very small percentage of cases this is possible. He will probably examine the inside of your ears. I was discharged in 70 and filled for it in 06. My hearing is 0%sc and tinnitus is 10%sc. Chuck

Posts: 1565 May 19 07 11:11 AM	Thinking about this earing business, it's a sham they are so tight on the earing loss. My first examin shows all zero db except one five. At discharge my hearing was shot but no disablilty, 11B in VN. Additional thought, maybe a way to separate the worsted and the damaged hearing. Example if your a 10 db and at discharge a 30 db would be judged differently form a 0 db to a 30 db on discharge as the 0 db. As the 10 to 30 was additional whereas the 0 to 30 suffered damage. Posts: 85 May 19 07 8:36 PM	When I had my C&P they asked if I was supplied hearing protection in the military. I indicated that nothing was supplied or even available. To my knowledge, hearing protection was not available untill the mid 80s. I separated in 69. After struggling for 35 years, I was awarded 70% and IU. When I see my cats jump off the couch, I know the doorbell is ringing.

Also the frequency of thetinnitus is important and how annoying that it can be. I was finally given 10% for tinnitus, but then they took it away to give me a 30% for Meinere's Disease which takes into consideration for the tinnitus. Karrie Currently 60% - process for reevaluation for potenitally 100% due ot Meinere's Disease with a "gait".
