I don't think $5/month is excessive, I am actually glad that's all it is. I kinda felt all along that it would be more than LY, when then again, what the heck isn't more than last year?

I swear I just got something in the mail from Medicare saying there would not be an increase. Is it
Ossicle it will only be on new claimants like it was a couple of years ago. Anyway, the article says that the average SS income will go up $19 a month, that is only 1100 a month and that is the average, I know my wife only gets about 800+ and I think that may be the lowest amount that is paid. The max at age 66 is about 2300 I think so there are one he'll of a people not even getting a livable income. Thank god for the VA compensation

Yesterday, I changed my Medicare Advantage from plan F which was going to cost 145 a month this year to a zero cost Humana plan. Even though Humana has copays, deductibles etc. I am saving a little over 1700 a year. I am generally in perfect health except for my heart and the VA takes care of that so I figured that the flu or bronchitis or something like that was costing me a 1700 copay. I would rather self Insure it or go to the ER and give them my VA card

Lou, the max is right around $2500/month, last I looked. But, you're right, SS alone is not a livable income.

The Maximum that anyone can currently receive from Social Security is $2513.00 a Month.

The Minimum that anyone can receive from Social Security is $1.00 a Month.

What I would propose...is a PERCENTAGE of Everyone's Income...that they would pay for Medicare.

Everyone gets the SAME PERCENTAGE when their Benefits are INCREASED.

Why not the SAME PERCENTAGE of their Income for the Benefits?

Those with a $85,000.00 Yearly Income(That's $7083.33 a Month)

Pays the SAME Monthly Medicare Premium as the Person with a $713.00 a Month Income.

Medicare retirees with Adjusted Gross Income in excess of $85,000/$170,000 married pay higher monthy premiums from $42 to $230 a month more than $104.90. They also pay higher Part D premiums based on same income scale. The premium scale is progressive because it increases for retirees with higher income.

What you are ignoring in your anlaysis of "inequality" in medicare premiums is that SS benefits, like income tax and medicare premium rates, are progressive in that they provide larger benefits as a percent of SS wages for lower income workers. The worker receiving $713 a month recieves benefits of 90% of his SS wages while the retiree receiving $2513 a month in SS benefits is receiving a benefit of about 26% of his lifetime SS wages. So the worker with a highest SS benefit who contributed 25X+ to SS of the amount of the worker with the lowest wages is subsidizing the worker with the lowest level of SS wages instead of receiving a benefit directly proportional to the amount contributed by himself and his employer.

I can see from your responses that all you are interested in doing is moving the goal posts every time I disprove your latest theory of inequality and that you will conjure up additional fictitious reasons of inequality to this response. I will now leave you to babble to yourself.

Intruder said that retirees receiving the 2500 a month have higher taxable income. Maybe or maybe not. I took early SS so I don't get 2500 but I have no taxable income but I was still maxed. Add SS and VA and my wife and I have about 72,000 a year tax free, that equates to about 105000 taxable. I have a lawyer friend who I guess is getting close to 200K a year in non taxable income. Like he says, isn't the tax code great.

Let's use the comparison of One Person who receives $713.00 a Month.

And another Person who receives TWICE that amount...$1426.00 a Month.

They BOTH Pay the SAME $99.90 Medicare Part B" Premium.

Now, the COLA Increase is 1.7% for 2013.

That means that the One Person will receive an Increase of $12.12 in 2013.

That means that the One Person will now receive $725.12 in 2013.

The Other Person will receive an Increase of $24.24 in 2013.

That means that the Other Person will now receive $1450.24 in 2013.

I would to say that I very much agree with intruder in his post #16. That's exactly how I feel about drawing almost the max and not being concerned because someone who is drawing less but paying the same absolute dollars in Medicare. All the working lives of the two people, the high end guy and the $713 guy, there was a huge disparity as to who paid the most of their working life wages in SS.

So, that pays off when you retire and, in intruder's example, the high end guy can only draw 26% of his lifetime wages, while the $713 guy will draw 90% of his lifetime wages.

The disparity is inherent to the System; the only way for it to be fair is to have a national wage rate at one figure for everybody, regardless of one's contribution by way of working.
