Posts: 25 Sep 12 12 5:46 PM	I spoke with DFAS earlier today pertaining to my DFAS Audit. My question is do it really take 90 days from the date of first disability check to complete the DFAS Audit for back pay? My claim closed out July 31st and my first monthly payment was August 31st. I am retired Navy. William

I am retired Navy. William --------------------- I've had two audits by DFAS and both took ~30 days from the date DFAS received notice of the award. However, they transmit the Audit Error Worksheet to the VA only once a month and that is around the 19th. How long it takes the VA to pay retro is anyone's guess as evidenced by the dozens (hundreds?) of posts regarding that subject on this web site. Ron

I am retired Navy. William Ron91 is absolutely correct (as usual). Think of it this way. You audit request arrives at DFAS say on the 1st of the month... The suspense date for collecting all the claims that need to be audited is say the 15th of the month. DFAS than runs the cycle with all the claims that met the suspense date after the 15th of the month. If your audit request arrives after the suspense date than it will sit until the next month cycle. After the cycle it completed the AEW (Audit Error Worksheet) are transmitted back to the VA around the 19th of the month, depending on the day of the week it falls on. Now what the suspense date and the cycles dates are I don't know but that should give you an idea as to why it takes between 2 and 3 months for the audits. Some hit the cycle at the right time and get theirs within 2 months.. Mine took almost 3 months. Luck has a lot to do with in.

The Audit Error Worksheet from DFAS has been back to my regional office since 4/19/12 pending audit review. My other one is still pending audit review from 9/19/11 as well. I Suspect the one from 9/11 will be canned since the later one contained all my input for dependents (under 18, over 18 in college dating back to 4/1/09) as well as the difference between 80% and 100% compensation (dating back to 7/1/11). I was called by my RO (Roanoke) and told they were handling claims from 2010, giving priority to wounded warriors, vets over 75, homeless vets and vets experiencing financial hardship. I was further told that since I was receiving 100% compensation and a retirement check there was no hurry and to wait my time and it would get processed when they get to it (very nasty conversation with a bad attitude) resulting from my IRIS inquiries and my RO's lack of responding to them twice in over a month. They supposedly have ONE person and only ONE person handling audits (and I KNOW he has to be overwhelmed). So for one audit it has been almost 13 months waiting, for the 2nd audit I have been waiting 5 months going into the 6th. I think it varies by each Regional Office'a workload.

Don't know if your aware of this but some time ago Cruiser said to me that his opinion that maybe the delay in paying was in the name of "fairness".... Fairness in that retirees are already drawing a retirement check (and therefore has income) while a non-retiree may not have any income. I was told the very same thing some months later by a VA employee (medical side) who did not know I was a retiree. Others here have posted hearing similar comments from the VA. Your account adds more evidence that the "We will process your claim in the order it was received" statement is a bold faced lie. It is also more circumstance evidence that the delay is intentional by design

Posts: 2141 Sep 23 12 7:10 AM	Here is a section from my IRIS response dated last Friday: "Our records indicate we received information from your retired pay center (RPC), the Audit Error Worksheet (AEW) on August 19, 2011, and a claim was established that day. It's open and in the initial stages of processing. We will be reviewing your claim to determine if additional information is needed. If so, we will inform you of what we need." It has been 15 months since my VA rating was increased to 100% effective the date of my retirement in 2006. So, after 15 months, my case is still in the initial stages of processing. Holy cow! My calculations show the VA owes me around $70K in back VA disability compensation (Delta between 80% and 100% from my retirement in 2006 and June 1st 2011). DFAS paid the $14K CRDP owed to me in less than two months. This is actually an easy calculation for the VA to make as the 100% rating made any CRDP offset calculations moot as I am due all of my retirement and 100% VA compensation from the date of retirement. DFAS figured out their part in short order but the VA lags way behind. BTW: I am also being processed out of the Roanoke, VA RO. Mike
