I had gone to the VA to apply for disability benefits for hearing loss and tinitus in my left ear. I had initially just wanted to make sure I was covered for later in life if I needed any treatment for it. There was a mix up with the audiology appointment and I received a letter saying I was denied due to missing the appointment but the hearing loss was service connected and my rating was set to 0%. At the time I hadn't given it that much thought because I had been given some poor information and was under the impression that monetary compensation wasn't likely due to this not being a severe disability. I decided at that point just to drop it considering I had at least gotten the condition service connected.
Well now I'm being told I could have gotten financial compensation all those years and am currently looking at about $120 per month for a 10% disability. Obviously, I have submitted the paperwork to increase my rating as well as get the right ear hearing loss service connected because I also have tinitus in that ear. Now I'm wondering if I my rating is increased to at least 10% (as I'm assuming it will be), will I be eligible for back pay back to the original date this condition was service connected. Is that how it works?
