Some things get a bit harsh yet I would like to see some of them contiue as I find myself still learning quite a bit through others points of view. Remember the old saying "Not a truer thing is said than said in jest". As far as folks getting their feelings hurt... I don't care to see or hear that, but to be offended is ones choice. It is not like a jacket that handed to someone to wear. However, at 44 years old, I have been called worse and treated worse by people that swore they love me.... I know I am not alone in that! So keep that little tidbit in mind.

Actually I would like to thank everybody for their nice words. Keep in mind that their are many ex members who couldn't play in tne sand box and are banned. I was banned in another vet forum because I couldn't deal with all the bad info and was very outspoken but that is another story. Commenting on 11Bman, we generally discuss closing threads unless it is an out and out pissing contest, religion or politics. We try to give a reason for closing. Some are closed because of poor taste but we usually discuss those, some are closed because a new member has opened a very old thread that may have misleading info. For instance an Agent Orange question from three years ago would have very different answers today and the old info could misdirect someone. Even politics we look at closely, some we leave open until it gets out of hand. We don't allow naming politicians but often the subject is worth discussing until someone blows it and starts blaming the Prez or some other official. Especially between some who have seved opur contry for 50 years of more, and for some vet trying to change that. As long as a thread progresses with the bias leaning in their direction, it stays open. The moment someone posts an opposing view—whammo! it's closed.

So keep that little tidbit in mind. I know I'm gonna upset a few folks with this but in the interest of information, research and clarity I'm gonna put it out there anyways. After looking over a number of posts I see that while we can't talk truths about various political figures, we can't ask about the quality of various veteran counsel, we can't talk about two boys kissing or how we like our chicken, we can drop sexual innuendos. What does this mean? To me it means that dialog is truly arbitrary. One of our young ladies drops a hilarious and uplifting comment about how many hours a tool is good for, followed by others who's comments lean towards the use of pharmaceuticals to increase the tensile strength and serviceability of the tool in question. All of which I enjoyed and was certainly in good fun. However, I would have been equally rewarded by hearing the followup to the poster who asked about legal counsel. As I would have also enjoyed the political banter frequently cut short, of which I am old enough to decide which way I want to lean irrespective of how harsh one poster was pushing the issue over the other. The next thing I did was to peruse many of the other forums hosted by Yuku many of these do allow political speech, opinions about services offered by others, in depth sexual topics (no pun intended), etc. So while many things appear to be limited because of Yuku guidelines, it's hard to tell where that line lies as I have not read their guidelines. But I do see many things not allowed here are tolerated on Yuku. We are past a "PG" rating with our sexual content and fall within a solid "R" rating. Personally, I am very greatful for what I have learned here, I am greatful for the cohorts I have met here and I am greatful for the hard work our Admins and Mods put into this. (I kinda feel sorry for NavyNCC simply because of his tag, "We keep you alive to serve this forum". Certainly he feels the sting of truth from that from time to time. Anyways, this has come a long ways to say that while our country is based on democracy, this forum is not. If it were, I would vote to loosen up on the political speech and the ability for those who have used counsel to share their experiences as I find both as educational as the VA stuff. While some may appear to be belligerent in their writings I find most to also be quite intelligent even if I don't agree with their position. Beside the VA stuff requires a hope and a prayer, most of the other provides intellectual humor and real insight as to another view point maybe not heard elsewhere. Please do not let my words lessen the apreciation for the hard work you folks do. I was just voicing an opinion as to how I would vote on the issues.

Four years ago I was very involved in a real estate forum and it turned political about 8 weeks before the election. In the end everybody hated each other, even people on the same side. In the end the forum just disintegrated. At the time it was the best in the nation. When you have a forum, you need a purpose and you should not move too far from the purpose. Ours is Vets helping Vets to go through the claims process and some side issues like medical assistance. It is not our job to criticize or fix the thenVA although the members here did a great job in getting CRSC fixed. At the top of every page is a statement about our philosophy. A couple years ago, when the AO thing started, we had many RVN vets who wanted more blogging about RVN, that was not our purpose, AO was our purpose. They got upset and starts their own forum, Vietnam vets. I and some other visit it and comment on a regular basis and they still are members in good standing here and often ask questions and comment. Their purpose is different than ours though. I would bet that they will prohibit politics because it would defeat their purpose as well. We have had great discussions in Social, for instance DADT. It never became a pissing contest or political but rather a good intellectual conversation of the pros and cons. Some people will joke about the navy gays marching in San Diego I bet most knew or suspected gays when we were in now they probably still do DADT because they don't walk around with a sign on their back, they are just less afraid. We have 17,000 members and with that population, I would bet that we have the same proportion of gays as the general military population. I vow I will continue moderating and administering this site as I have for almost 4 years. And guess what some will not agree with my actions. Guess what again I'm not asking you to. Most things done on this site are visited about and agreed upon by a majority of admins and mods. So if you slap or attempt to slap a mod or admin for an action they took you are slapping the majority of the staff on VBN.
