The Good Conduct Medal is awarded for exemplary behavior, efficiency, and fidelity in active Federal Military service. It is awarded on a selective basis to each soldier who distinguishes himself/herself from among his/her fellow soldiers by their exemplary conduct, efficiency, and fidelity throughout a specified period of continuous enlisted active Federal military service. Qualifying periods of service include each three years completed after 27 August 1940 or, for first award only, upon completion of at least one year upon termination of service if separated prior to three years. Also for the first award only, for those individuals who died before completing one year of active Federal military service if the death occurred in the line of duty. The immediate commander must approve the award and the award must be announced in permanent orders.[5] I remember 4 for the Navy because if you saw a sailor back then with 3 stripes on his uniform and they were not gold but Red indicated that person had gotten into some type of trouble becaue 12 years of straight good conduct you got to wear the gold color. Posts: 212 Jul 21 12 12:47 AM	Ever notice how much cabbage young troops have now? I saw a TSgt at the DM BX the other day that had 6 rows!! I spoke to him and he agreed there are way to many awards now. There are very few medals / awards that mean squat to me anymore. On the Stolen Valor Act I wish it had been written to differentiate between someone gaining from lies, fraud etc. What about the old coot at the VFW reliving Korea? You know he's spinning some yarns but is it causing harm? No one was believing him but no one made a big deal about it. I had an uncle that was a tin bender (sheet metal repair) on B17's in WWII. He saw so much carnage and damage that he began to remember himself as a tail gunner. The adults knew the truth but they also knew he had issues. We call it PTSD now. Can you imagine what he saw on a daily basis? Would you want him prosecuted? When you lie for personal gain or present yourself as a hero for personal gain, gloves off.
