It is not a lockdown unit, you are able to take weekend theraputic passed each weekend. The Cohort consists of eight veterans and starts up at the same time so all the veterans go through the entire program together. In the cohort I went through there were seven males and one female, and all of the vets except the female vet was a combat vet. So combat trauma is not the only qualifying criteria. Though the program is geared for the combat veteran, more because that is the bulk of the patients.

The days are busy, they start at 8:30am and there are days that go till 9pm. There are different classes and sessions ranging from CPT, sleep hygiene, emotion regulation, breathing stretching and relaxation, minfulness, sleep and dreams, there is also an extensive arts and recreation program built into the course. I was skeptical of the benefit of the art and rec program, but it turned out to be one of the best parts of the program. They also use Native American traditions in the recovery such as smudging and the use of sweat lodges. The days are very busy. I actually wrote two articles for the VA public affairs office here, one was an article and the other is my personal story dealing with my PTSD.
