My mom, a USMC widow, died in mid-October, 2011. At the time, I was led to believe that the payment she received on October 1 was for September, and therefore I was to make sure the one for November 1 was not deposited. After consulting with her bank, I made sure her checking account was closed before that date so the deposit would bounce back to the government.
Now I'm getting letters from the VA about owing them $1,154. I called the VA on June 1 and told them what I had done last year. The CSR said everything was okay, blah blah blah blah, yadda yadda yadda, and led me to believe the matter was closed. Today I received a letter dated June 5 which said that I still owe them the $1,154 for the month of October, 2011. The thing is, if the October 1 paydate was for the month of September, then I owe them zip-zero-nada. If it was for October, I'll have to swallow hard and pay them.
UPDATE: As I was writing this I found a schedule at http://www.dfas.mil/retiredmilitary/manage/payschedule.html that indicates that I was right in the first place and the VA is snowing me.

Any advice will be appreciated. Needless to say I'm pretty grouchy right now. I'll call the VA back tomorrow from work and ask them again.
