Posts: 15 Jun 13 12 5:31 PM	Tags : None I want to get my concealed weapons permit (to keep a gun on me like when i'm at the beach or out alone or well.....all the time) But anyhow, what are the laws on having a concealed weapons permit with a mental health disorder? I have 3 guns, and a crap load of Ammo, I am not homicidal and not really suicidal (I've thought about it but my children keep me from doing it....emotional ups and downs and all) Anyone know the laws? Should I just call the local sherrif?

Posts: 613 Jun 13 12 7:46 PM	I don't know if this will help but my husband, a Vietnam Vet, rated at 70 % for PTSD wants to get a hand gun permit also. Ken paid $80.00 for the class but when he started reading the paper work for the permit he realized that he could not get it . There are several questions on there asking if you have ever been treated for a mental disorder. It is a federal offence to not answer truthfully. Posts: 3503 Jun 13 12 9:14 PM	It depends on your state law. Google your state's Department of Safety and check on the application questions. If it only addresses "court-ordered" or "conservator" in relation to a mental condition then it does not impact you. Posts: 468 Jun 13 12 9:46 PM	I'd say it's sort of a general rule of thumb that unless you were committed involuntarily or by a court order, you're OK. It does depend on state law so you need to read the law. In my state, Missouri there is no problem. Additionally there is nothing in that federal questionaire that precludes someone. I'll ask once i get the nerve to call or go to the class required, TY very much for the replies....Yes I will be honest, The last thing I need is jail/prison time. I think having a hand-gun would help me feel more secure wether I use it or not. THANK YOU ALL for being so informative!

I really want a CPL esspecially in detroit where most people are packing. I just want to do it legally, for my own safety as well as others. Would they be able to look up my VA medical records? Haven't gotten one yet but would definetly make me feel more confident going outside of the house. Posts: 1734 Jun 14 12 7:01 AM	I don't think it's an issue in Texas but you can have one in your Vehicle all the time without a permit to carry, you just can't walk around with a concealed handgun without the permit. When I took my PTSD class the instructor didn't like us keeping firearms but like was said above unless a court orders it you can have them and continue to buy more filling out the federal paperwork just fine. I quit keeping one in my car because I realized it made me a more aggresive driver knowing it was there but I can understand someone wanting to.

Everyone here has been giving excerpts from their state (which is fine as long as you live in their state). Posts: 99 Jun 26 12 11:47 AM	The Federal form for buying guns (4473) has a paragraph that cuts veterans slack. Unless you have been commited against your will, you are all set. Every state is different. Try going to atf.gov and if need be, get a lawyer. Know that if your involved in any shooting it will be picked over like a lost wallet in congress.

The questionnaire does not have any questions concerning PTSD in TN but there is one concerning SS disability for a mental condition (and PTSD is included in that area per the Dept. of Safety).
