I hope that title made some sense. I'm trying to get my dad rated for his diabetes so he can get CRSC benefits. If I understand correctly, the fact that he's on meds will likely get him a 20% rating. What else does the VA give a rating to that's related to diabetes? He does have some kidney issues which that doc says is absolutely related to his diabetes but it's not full blown kidney disease. He also has vision problems but then who doesn't.

From all your experiences what we can "elaborate" on to get that rating up.

Cataracts are a possibility. If he has retinopathy in his eyes that is certainly a secondary condition of diabetes. Peripheral neuropathy of the nerves in his arms and legs is a possibility if he has that condition. I don't know what a rating for the kidney problems are but it should be a secondary condition. Get his doctor to write a letter explaining how these conditions are related to his diabetes and file a claim with his medical records.

Diabetes can take a toll on anyone. Depression is also one of the conditions that can be secondary to Diabetes. Have you been treated for depression? Check with your doc.

Thank you so much for the responses. Sometimes the easiest things are the hardest to figure out. LOL I didn't even think to just google.....complications of diabetes.

Would a letter from his doc outlining everything be better than filing out this form?

That VA form as you probably already know is the Disability Benefits Questionnaire (DBQ) for diabetes mellitus. If your dad's Dr. will fill that out you could save you and your dad trouble, time and travel expense to a VA facility. Regarding his kidney issues, look at section 3B & 3C of that DBQ for diabetes. It might be helpful if you took along those DBQ's related to ALL your dad's medical conditions so the Doc can fill those out at the same time. You can find a list of those downloadable forms here:

I took in a stack of those DBQ's to my Dr. and had them back in a few days since all the info was in my records. My opthomologist of 17 years I've been seeing for glaucoma and cataracts on the other hand was not too Nam Vet friendly and refused, so be forewarned of the narrow minds in medical practice.

birrdyy, to start you dad needs to be dx'ed with the complications. You can add the complications without a dx.

Thank you so much for the posts.

Excellent idea about filling out all forms that can be remotely linked.

The more I look at stuff the more I realize he has a lot of diabetic related issues. It didn't really dawn on me that this or that is so easily related to being a diabetic.

Yes you will need all files related to the DX. You filling out the form will do no good unless VA can see the DR.s DX is based on correct medical protocol , that is what all lab forms and related files do.

Thanks for the reply. I should've been more clear but I was referring to the questionnaires (the DBQs) that the doctors will fill out. It seems to me that they would be alot more detailed then the medical files. Thanks

Wow that is a short one. My DBQ for COPD is about 8 pages. When I gave it to the pulmonologist he said its alot of work to do. I said it's for the gov't, and you dont want to get in trouble with them. Especially the IRS.. I had it complete the next morning.
