Posts: 3 May 16 12 1:39 PM	I applied for SSDI last month since for the longest time I was unaware I could collect both my VA and SSDI without penalty. I am 50% disabled with the VA and PDRl 40% from the USMC. I haven't been able to get a job since my original TDRL discharge in December of 2009. 20% Back Injury 30% PTSD 10% Tinnitus What are my chances of an SSDI approval?

Posts: 3337 May 16 12 5:38 PM	Your chances are as good as anybody else’s. Not too be dismal, but, be advised that first time filers are denied close to 70% of the time. So start working on a gameplan for your appeal for reconsideration so you'll be ready. I applied 17 Apr being 100% P&T with VA doctor C&P notes saying I can't work nor can I sit for more than 10 minutes. So you would think I will be a shoe in to win SSDI right since I included all that info with my SSDI application? But I highly doubt it and have started working on my appeal already thinking up new ways of rebuttal but of course I can't complete my appeal it til I know exactly the wording they will use to deny me. And then as soon as my appeal is denied I will find a lawyer to represent me at the inevitable ALJ hearing. Then I will win :-) Funny though how my SSDI will only be a taxable $1k/month yet I spent 2000% more time on my initial SSDI submission package than I ever did with my VA submissions. And the VA pays so much more and tax free. Hmmm....

Posts: 6039 May 17 12 9:04 AM	IF you are denied (and you may very qwell NOT be denied), do NOT wait to come back here for advice. Immediately appeal that decision (sending Social Security a letter stating that you want to appeal that decision is enough), and THEN come back here for further advice. You only have 60 days to appeal a Social Security Denial, so do NOT sit around waiting for someone to tell you what to do. Get the appeal moving, and then get additional help. Posts: 25 May 17 12 9:05 AM	I took early social security benefits, at age 62. Been getting benefits since February of 2012. Can I still apply for ssdi or is it a waste of time, would I received my normal pay at age 66, or would it stay the same. Applied for IU in Jan. 2012, havn't received a descision yet from VA. Any input would be appreciated by this FMF Corpsman, RVN 68/69.

Yes you can apply for SSDI, if you get approved you will be paid at the rate you would have gotten if you waited till age 66, at age 66 it will then revert to regular Social Security and no change in the amount. Use Patricks Self Report letter and submit it with your claim if you have PTSD, whcih I will assume you do if you were a Doc in RVN. She has some experience being disabled herself and having gotten her approval 4 months after her initial application, 5 months total with QA review. She is going to help me start compliling an appeal to play it safe although neither of us are sure what we can add to make any difference...

I served with the 0311's for 10 months in the bush, 13 major operations, BLT 2/7. I would do it all over again, even at my age, the Marines are truly the best, I only wished that I could have saved more, my dreams still remember those who gave all.God Bless the Corps, and thoses who serve in harms way, Semper Fi. Posts: 3410 May 21 12 8:02 AM	Hello Brothers. Reading the thread and have to add my 2 pennies. I had heart attack in 2007, and bypass in 2010. I was 61 when it all went down. Felt good for awhile, but passed out two times and fell off ladders. I said I am not going thru all this to die from a fall. I was an electrician my whole life. Went for regularr ss at age 62 did not know about ssdi. I filled out something and wias called in for a test . Gave the SSDI doc cardio papers, and he checked my scars. Two months later a letter stating your back pay of 10K will be direct deposited this month . Your monthly will increase to what your payment would have been at 66. I find that amazing. I read horror stories here every day. In my case it was a snap, but my VA case may go for up to four years.GO FIGURE.

Posts: 88 Jun 23 12 1:20 PM	As Old Medic said: you may NOT be denied! Apply, put in your paperwork, go to any exam they may want, send them your VA letter. Than wait. Getting all spun up and starting to work on your appeal before you even have an answer is not the best for stress management! You can look up your state and see how many first time appliers get there SSDI. You mite be surprised that its more people than you think! I applied, went to 1 exam, sent them my VA letter (100% P&T) it took about 4 months and was granted first time! and I was 49 when it was granted. good luck

It has been two months now since I applied at the US Embassy in Manila but haven't heard anything from them since Baltimore asked for my VA medical records even though I had already included them all with my SSDI application. The Embassy SS girl e-mailed Baltimore back saying that they already have them and that's the last contact since 31 Apr. Am waiting for any kind of correspondence from them such as telling me that they received my application, am scheduled for a med exam, have been denied, anything... anything at all... USAF 1987-2007 VA Schedular/Singular 100% P&T (with SMC-S & K). Working on inferred A&A SSDI Approved (somehow on first try) Ad Muncher

Posts: 2 Jun 24 12 6:33 AM	My Application got sent out in mail, I already collect 100% more if they had it but anyways. I have been inpatient hospitalized more times than I can count on my fingers. Previous serious suicide attempts and I have a lawyer working on my case. If i sent it out in May how long do you think the approval will take and what do you think my chances are of a YES. Anyways I have to pay my lawyer 25% of the back pay check. How much is that usually around like the whole check and does anyone know the payments on SSDI. I also heard since I was 100% service connected I can apply for another benefit called unability to maintain work or something like that. Does anyone know about that...Thanks, TIM USAF

Posts: 12936 Jun 25 12 10:45 AM 10,000 plus post...	Tim , you are talking about IU, that is paid to a vet when he can't work but is not rated at 100%. As you are 100% it won't help you at all. Now my SSDI claim took 3 months and was declined. I appealed and I understand that it takes about the same amount of time because the first appeal is just a look see by another person. The next appeal is with a SS judge and that can take a while. If your attorney specializes in SS then he should be able to give you an idea of how long since he deals with this everyday.
