Posts: 2 Apr 20 12 8:04 PM	Tags : apnea, sleep I am already rated at 60% paid for 50. They are working on my Sleep Apnea claim now. My question is has anyone ever been rated less than 50% for sleep apnea that is service related? Since I'm already rated 60% will I be rated at 110% and paid the whole 100% even though I'm employable or will I just get benefits for 100% and paid less? Thanks to anyone that can help.

Posts: 6031 Apr 20 12 11:17 PM	You can NOT be rated at 60%, but only paid at the 50% level. You appear to be more than somewhat confused about how VA Math works. If you are rated at 50%, and you added another 50% disability, then your Service Connected disability level would be 75%, paid at 80%. Posts: 2836 Apr 21 12 1:43 AM	USernie, Something isn't exact here. Whatever rate the VA's paying you at, that is your physical rating and paid rating. Sounds like you may have something that if you add it up as a bilateral or something would in "normal" math give you a 60% but under va math show you ranking a 50% rating, is that's what happening here? Before you ask, someone else will have to explain the bilateral and VA math to you, cause I've still not gotten a grasp on it after all these years. So if you're at 50% and get the 50% because of the Sleep Apnea-that is if you use the CPAP machine, then you'd warrant a 80% physical rating, that is if I've got the VA math thing right this AM- That'd still be despite normal math showing you've got a 100%. As to your question of being rated less than 50% for the Sleep Apnea, yes you can be. If your SA isn't bad enough for a mask you can get any of the following ratings: 6847 Sleep Apnea Syndromes (Obstructive, Central, Mixed): Chronic respiratory failure with carbon dioxide retention or cor pulmonale, or; requires tracheostomy……………100 Requires use of breathing assistance device such as continuous airway pressure (CPAP) machine…………………..50 Persistent day-time hypersomnolence……………………………………………………………………………………………..30 Asymptomatic but with documented sleep disorder breathing………………………………………………………………….0 Regards, Whoop

Almost two years ago I was DX with OSA. at the time I had 10 marathons under my belt and weighed in at 185lbs at 5"10" am 100% vegan and raw. So my educated guess is that my OSA didn't really have anything to do with my weight. I am fit and still run marathons its just not as fun anymore.. If you have such a problem with a VET getting some comp for SA maybe you should have your fight with YOUR government.. Just my two cents. Peace out and keep fighting the GOOD fight.

I was DX'd with OSA when I was the most fit in my life... I only ran 10 milers though. The time of the DX was between Desert Storm and 9/11. I am a Desert Storm Combat Veteran and have other health issues surfacing. I've took care of my self throughout my life. The physical world of serving in the Army does that to a person. I'm not as physically active as I once was due to injuries, etc. Yet, I'm the most thin person in my family, I can exercise by walking, and I watch what I eat, mostly adhering to the south beach type foods. I'm not fat... nor am I skinny. My doctor tells me that my weight is right where it should be. cheattheVA, I respect your first amendment rights of free speech. But, I do not respect your opinion. Some more food for thought... because we served our country, we excluded ourselves from parts of the "American Dream" that the majority of Americans had the opportunity to gain. We tend to become home owners in our final homes many years after our civilian counterparts. We never had the opportunity to establish ourselves within a community until later in life. Our families had to make new friends, experience new schools, and change health care providers every few years. We never experienced employment that allowed us to really earn and establish worldly expertise. We never earned a bonus for productivity. We never had the opportunity to grow within a corporate environment and experience extraordinary financial gains. Love of country, camaraderie, or what ever kept us serving, surrendered all these things and more. We did experience a physically demanding, more than 40 hour work week. We experienced great satisfaction being part of something bigger that ourselves. But, it cost us our youth and, often, our health. Often, we enter the civilian work force at levels below our experiences and talent for numerous reasons, ranging from health to policies. When it comes to health and a veteran cannot perform at their normal levels due to health, the VA compensation helps level the playing field. I think of those who are 100% disabled and fully understand that they never had the opportunity to compete for larger wages and experiences. Their service to country prevented this. They surrendered the "American Dream" so that others could have the opportunity to do so. Yea, I know these things may sound corny. I'm also sure I didn't convince you either. Some people that if they were to lose a bit of weight they would not have OSA. But to group everyone into those categories is just rediculous. I am 5'8", 180lbs (which is below military weight for my height) and in very good shape. I have been diagnosed with sleep apnea due to 13 years of life at sea and a product of PTSD. I wasnt going to waste my time on this statement but I wanted to make sure others see that it does effect people within weight standards. - DCC Sempor Fortis! Navy Chief ! Navy Pride !

Not complicated but definately worth learning how it works. I'm 165-175 lbs at 71", (that would be 5 foot 11 inches for the spammer who calls himself a cheat), and have been for at least the last 20 years. I've got OSA and have been on therapy for it with BiPap for the last 7 years. It improves my life daily. I do not consider myself in the category depicted in the statement: "fat, dishonest losers who have few propsects in the civilian world will pursue disability for sleep apnea". As a matter of fact, it kind of offends me as I have been retired for almost two years now and work 2 jobs to make the grocery money and pay the bills. I think the board and the OP deserve an apology from you as well as a full and complete retractment of your silly uninformed statement. V/R, Steve.

I boxed and I was a religious body builder. Meaning I lifted weights daily. I was injured doing my job. Not bungee jumping, skiing, motorcycle riding or anything related to a slight free time danger. My symptoms of the OSA started shortly after the injuries and worsened over the years. I gained weight, due to the inability to workout and exercise or to work. Next, I've 2 Masters degrees as well as a Bachelors, was in law enforcement prior to the 1st Gulf war and have had the ability, until my disability took my health, to work and earn a very good living and doing so in the civilian as well as among the military community as a contractor. All of these issues either came from hard work, doing my job or because of it. You being an ass must come naturally or do you have to work hard at it? For you to come on board, make such a comment and then bug out, only means you probably fit some of the other descriptions the other vets have posted here about you or possibly worse. My advice to you is this: until you know what you're talking about, especially dealing with a persons illnesses or injuries or diseases, dealing with service connection or as secondary to said issues, then keep your pie hole plugged or move onto other forums. Actually, I'm surprised the mods didn't put you in your place. On the otherside of this coin, I bet it burns your rear, to have to thank us vets, you've the freedom and luxury to be able to speak your mind out in the open. Cause we know you certainly weren't one of the few or the proud, with such moronic comments. Regards, Whoop

I too have OSA due to other injuries and have just recently filed for the SA (use CPAP) on top of ischemic heart disease (heart attack)and diabetes with a rating of 70%. Anyone care to give me a guess as to where I may end up in the ratings war?

Posts: 2836 Jun 19 12 9:25 AM	NavyBill, If you get the SA service connected, since you use the CPAP machine, it'll give you an additional 50% rating. As to your other issues, don't know how that will be rated, as I've no experience with the heart issues or diabetes but if you've 70% for that already, then adding the 50% for the SA, that should give you either an 80% rating in total (or possibly a 90%). Someone who knows the VA's fuzzy math can hit you with the EXACT percentage, by doing the math for you or telling/showing you how to do so as well. I've never understood it myself. Regards, Whoop
