It begins in earnest summer of 2012 as we cross the country - some 16,000 miles or more - to interview, honor, and remember Cold War veterans. We will travel to a dozen former Strategic Air Command bases, Naval Bases, Army instillations, plus a lot of American history along the way. SUPPORT our effort and join in. If you are a Cold War vet - register with us. We need all of you to sign up for periodic updates. And, no. We won't spam you or sell your info! But we do want to invite you to receive the recognition you have earned. During that time tensions and the threat of nuclear war hung over America for so long it was taken for granted. When the Cold War ended - those who served received no recognition... and for almost half that time they and the uniforms they wore were shown active disrespect. Cold War Salute is dedicated to changing that. This documentary will be made covering 8,000 to 20,000 miles of America in a road trip that will expand at the pleasure of the people of the United States. As "Crazy Horse, Cutter, and the Minuteman" criss cross the country awarding the US Cold War Commemorative Medal to veterans from almost five decades of un-sung service the movement will expand. Posts: 2259 Apr 16 12 9:28 AM	As a veteran that served during the cold "war" (1978-86), I respectfully decline any recognition for that. IMO the monies should go to the Veterans of REAL wars. The men and women that served in harm's way. The one's that answered the call when they were served notice to appear at the local processing station, the ones that volunteered to serve in light of the possibility of being sent to the sand box, the ones that freed the entire world from the invading nazi and japanese armys, the ones that served in Korea... Don't misconstrue what I say. Those that served during the same period I did certainly made huge sacrifices to serve our country, and if we as a country ended up in a war, we all would have certainly accomplished what was asked of us. those who served received no recognition... and for almost half that time they and the uniforms they wore were shown active disrespect. That statement ONLY applies to Viet Nam Veterans... I know of absolutely NO Veteran of my era that were shown disrespect, called baby killers and murderers, protested against, and basically ignored by the VA. It was, during the period I served as is now, an all volunteer force and to demand recognition is not very military-like minded. If you really want to do something that will benefit ALL Veterans, how about lobbying the politicians to properly fund the VA? I will apologize in advance if I have not properly conveyed my personal opinion, and it is misconstrued as a slam to any Veteran. That is not my intent at all. In fact, quite the contrary. Posts: 7456 Apr 16 12 10:13 AM	I basically agree with Vet2112. I served from 1964 to 1986. I got all the "medals" I needed or deserved. I got the National Defense medal just for putting on the uniform, 2 medals for serving in Vietnam, a medal for serving in Korea and all the other "fruit salad" most soldiers got at that time, including one for going to school, and the famous "Good conduct" medal. Vet2112 I must disagree with one statement you made: I know of absolutely NO Veteran of my era that were shown disrespect, As recently as 1985, I saw a lot of disrespect for military personal. As an example, I had a woman tell me, when she learned I was about to retire, that military retirement was nothing more than federal welfare! That's pretty disrespectful. By 1986, it was no where near as bad as the 60's and early 70's, but it was still there. Of course, the worse was at a bar in southern Georgia, 1964. They had a sign on their front door that read: No Dogs, GI's, or N****rs allowed. We took care of that, but that is another story for another time. Point is, there always has been, and always will be, dislike for military personal by some of society, on both sides of the ideology aisle. But, back to the OP, let's just try to give all Vets the care they need, not worry about another "medal."

I hope you meant to say Vietnam ERA veterans because there were many who never served "in country" but were also shown disrespect, since a uniform wouldn't have necessarily conveyed where they served. And how about all those who enlisted during the Vietnam war, knowing that they could be sent there, but never were?

After I stopped laughing I realized they are serious. A couple quotes from the website... Those serving in uniform during this period were constantly at risk of the tenuous situation between the Soviet Union and the USA escalating to nuclear conflict. Those who served in the Army in Germany at the Fulda Gap constantly faced tensions and even skirmishes, explosions, and other life/death exchanges that were either never publicized, considered classified, or written off as “training exercises” publicly. This threat only affected the military?? How about every swinging stick walking the planet! Then there's this gem... Then the Soviet Union collapsed. The Wall came down and the nuclear threat abated. George H. W. Bush told the Strategic Air Command – the elite Air Force command that had been created to lead the air defenses during the Cold War – to Stand Down. And everyone… went home. No parades. No celebrations. Not even a welcome home celebration. They just laid down their weapons, took off the uniform, put on their “civies”… and went to look for a job. Sounds like my son wanting credit for cleaning his room. Here is the money I am talking about... $2,422 Raised of $50,000 Goal And from that website... To shoot the first leg of the trip (8000 miles) and to award the minimum 2000 medals to veterans we need $250,000 (medal sets, vehicles, miles, hotels, gas, crew... it adds up). How about spending that on the families of POW/MIAs or to the children that lost their dad or mom in the sandbox? Or IUD victims, or..... I could go on. I applaude you for posting something positive about Veterans... but come on man.

During the time period cited by the poster, 1945/1992, I (and many other vets) had a closeup and personal experience with a Hot War--and there ain't no way to compare a hot war with a cold war. No offense intended but I feel the difference should be mentioned. "Those who were there will never forget; those who were not will never know."

Posts: 5816 Apr 16 12 1:57 PM	It is also worth mentioning that we should not overlook the disrespect, or lack of respect and attention to the Korean War Vets. That was an unpopular war also and the Vets of that War were not treated as well as the WWII Vets.

I think there is a COLD WAR MEDAL SCAM GOING ON FOR YEARS..THEY even got a nice pretty certificate.. Since the Cold War ended, the rise of Islamist terrorist and Jihadist has gone off the scale compared to where it was during the height of things. Could you ever imagine that Islamist terrorists could actually pull off anything within the Russian Empire, before it collasped. I have always thought that the end of the Russian Empire was not good for us, I didn't think it then and I don't now. We had maintained superiority over them from Day One, and they thru their intimidation, maintain more peace in Asis and parts of Europe that we'll probably never see again. Just my thoughts./

Let's look at the math here: 8,000 miles at $250,000? That adds up to $31.25/mile...and 2,000 medals is roughly one every 4 miles. Assume these "medals, on a large order scale (and no idea what the look like) cost two bucks apiece, we have $$4,000. And these guys need a quarter of a million bucks? Run for the Wall does a trek from LA to DC every year for Memorial Day and Rolling Thunder and it costs nothing to make the 10 day trip, visit lots of cities and towns, memorials and VA Hospitals along the way...the riders pay their own way to honor, respect, and visit vets along the way and spread the word of our POW/ MIAs. Nope...ain't gonna do it! And, every veteran can send off and receive a nice Cold War Certificate FREE (Google it....FREE and official, not some conjured up unofficial thingy.) Fillean meal ar an meallaire.

As far as the disrespect, unfortunately it has existed for a very long time and will continue to exist. I have experienced it first hand. But not even remotely close to the treatment our Viet Nam Vets received. I salute ALL of my brothers and sisters no matter what era or area they served. J
