Now that we are not transferring every 3 years I decided to go ahead and bite the bullet. The coop is mostly complete and I will start on the pen this weekend. I picked up 10 chicks last night so I am on a dead line to get the pen finished. So far I am enjoying the project. NavyNCC "We keep you alive to serve this ship"

As a kid from the country we always had chickens and I raised them when I first got married - gave up when I realized that my brand new wife would not eat a chicken that I had raised? (Somehow the chickens from the store are better or somethin' - I never could get that straight.) Anyway I figured the chickens were easier & cheaper to get rid of than the wife. Posts: 3416 Apr 5 12 2:22 PM	Navy, The coop looks great ! I have a good buddy with several coops - he has put wheels on one end of each of them incase he wants to move them. He mainly has ornamental birds and sells fertilized eggs for incubator hatching. He also has quail and pheasants, some regular type chickens for everyday eggs. One of his breed lay a chocolate colored egg and these eggs can be quite costly. He mainly specializes in Frizzles,Silkies and Blue Laced Red Wyandotte. Posts: 4626 Apr 15 12 7:45 AM Navy Chief Initiated by Choice Proud of Tradition	I've been doing a little more work on the coop. I put this vinyl flooring in to help with cleanout. The poop dosen't stick to it so much so you just have to sweep the coop out to clean it. I closed off the nesting boxes for now. I don't want them to think this is just a nice place to hang out. Here I have added a deep layer of pine shavings and Diatomaceous Earth (the gray stuff you see). The DE kills mites and other shelled bugs and keeps the odor to a minimum. I had just put the chicks in and they were checking out the new digs. In the picture below I'm putting up the wire for the cage. I'm using 1/4" Hardware cloth. I am burying it about 8" deep and coming out about 10". This way any critter that tries to dig into the coop will have their work cut out for them. Posts: 4277 Apr 16 12 12:34 AM	We have 5 chickens that run free, they help with the insects, they all roost in the trees, we don't bother trying to collect the eggs for you never know were they a laying. I buy a 50 pond bag of cracked corn about every 3 months but the way they eat the bugs makes it worth while to buy the corn.. US Army Retired Vietnam 1969-70 90% IU P&T SSDI

When she opens the nest box one day and finds a chicken snake in there ,she'll be done with chickens . Oh and I had chickens along time ago but, have to feed and water them and can't take them on a trip with you . Now that I have pointed all the negatives out ,hope everything goes well.

Posts: 1386 Apr 18 12 10:01 AM	Ole salt, you reminded me of the old days when I first found a chicken snake in the henhouse....that sucker had swallowed on of MY eggs. The case required delicate surgery. I am sorry to report that the egg was saved but the patient didn't make it. At any rate, if the wife finds a chicken snake it will be the Chief's problem and not hers, and if a poor country boy (me) had enough initiative to do surgery on a chicken snake I'm sure a Navy Chief can handle it.. After all, he's had all that experience with goats & stuff . Ivac
