My youngest son (3 deployments to Afghanistan) filed a claim for PTSD approx. 16 months ago, all Medical exams have been completed. Any guess when a decision could be made. We have check eBenefits every 3 to 5 months and find the status to be stuck on review of evidence for the past 12 months

Sorry to say but Ebenefits is worthless when it comes to checking for "claims status." Individual RO's are responsible for entering data into the system and are way behind. One day you could be in "gathering evidence" and the next day you could be in the "notification phase."

Tell your son to hang in there and thank him for his service. If you have any questions on here please post them as this is a great board for veterans helping veterans out.

Try calling the 1800 number, every time I tried calling i seemed to get movement. My PTSD only took 2 weeks, but it was an add on to an older claim that was a year old. Also try a VSO like Purple heart. Google order of the purple heart and find your local agency. It is free and they will represent you and help you file. Before they work for you, you will have to sign a power of attorney to them. Purple heart seems to be able to get a better status than what you can find on ebenefits or even by calling. I also think the American legion has a VSO and there are a few others. I highly reccomend NOT trying to tackle the Va without VSO help. BUT and I say BUT you still need to keep track of your own stuff and be on top of it, these VSO's are non for profit and things can slip

Also if he goes to the Va he can get a print out of his C&P exam for PTSD, that will tell you if hes probably going to get compensation or not.

Also is it 16 months from when he filed or when he had his first C&P exam? I has to weight about 3-4 months between filing and an exam, so you can but you really cant count that time, as the ball will not get rolling until you have that C&P exam. If thats the case you have been waiting about a year, and I would think you should see some movement.

in 2 months, after 18 months have passed from date of filing with no final decision and little to no action your son or his representative are eligible to call the National VA Claims Assistant Office, Office of Case Management 1- 202 - 273 - 7453 or try this one. 1-202- 273 - 5674. for over 18 months claims with no action or decision

the important part is, Has the VHA supplied your son with effective PTSD treatment, both meds AND mental health counseling. His is a long road, will have PTSD the rest of his life. Early effective treatment is the key

the 800 number is overloaded and is not set up properly so that the call taker has access to the latest status info on each claim.

Steelehead..........yes he is receiving excellent care from the VA and we can not thank you guys enough for all the information concerning his claim. He has about 31 days before hitting the 18 month filing so I will keep the 800 number handy.....thanks again!!

I love rocking the boat. My claim finally moved when I got my congressman's office involved. But I do agree that patience, a well stocked bar, and an engaging hobby are all useful while waiting.
