Hysterical Conversion is basically Conversion disorder.  As Old Medic states, it causes many bodily shutdowns because the nature stressors is so intense.  It may cause blindness, paralysis, loss of hearing, speech, and immobility, or a catatonic state.

Read back on some history of the Kmer Rouge in Cambodia.  A village was entered and all the children were brought out into the central area of the village.  All the mothers were forced to watch their children being slaughtered.  Several of them became blind, but no specific physical reason could be found.  We brought many of them back to the states to be examined.  What ultimately was found was Conversion Disorder.

Anyone can develop Conversion Disorder. Rape victims, physical abuse, sexual molestation, are but a few things that can bring about Conversion Disorder.  It takes a lot of counseling to help the patient overcome their stressors.  However, most recover the area(s) affected because of the stressor.

Although this a book, if you read Page 166 and on, it gives a fairly detailed look at Conversion Disorder in Cambodian Women.
