Posts: 196 Mar 3 12 2:55 PM	Recently the VA docs put me on Effexor. I feel much better though I still sleep a lot. My question is, I have been (for me) incredibly "chatty" lately. I think I sent my sister 10 emails in 2 days. I even emailed the sister I am not talking to because I'm mad at her. I've also been talking to people online (unheard of for me). Does anyone know if this is an effect of the medicine? I'm not saying it's a bad thing. I'm just wondering why my behavior is different? 1990 - 2010 USAF Captain, Retired Enlisted - Machinist Officer - Space and Missile Ops Missile Maintenance Global Ops Center Space and Missile Subject Matter Expert VA Rated SC 90% disabled Hysterectomy 50% Major Depression with OCD 50% Allergic Rhinitis 30% Obstructive sleep apnea 30% Migraines 30% Tinnitis 10% Vocal Cord Dysfunction 10% Bilateral Hearing Loss 0% Despite hearing aids, what's up with that? Hypertension 0% Recently Diagnosed with PTSD, but no claim made since I'm, already at 90%.

Posts: 1947 Mar 3 12 3:19 PM	I don't have an Effexor but it was brought up to my attention....I'm sure in my opinion, that my mental meds are very helpful in most days...It you've just started taking Effexor, it could be the cause...(LG) Life's Good.....People around you should've noticed the difference now & then...I'm happy for you Honor Bound To Defend Freedom! Posts: 161 Mar 3 12 4:04 PM	Effexor is the ONLY psych medication I have ever taken that did NOT cause me sexual side effects. Took about 2 months to work. Maybe I should try some, thanks for bringing the thought up.

Posts: 1175 Mar 3 12 5:45 PM	I took Effexor for over a year. I started having side effects with it though. My legs would tingle and I couldn't get to sleep it was so bothersome. It wasn't really a tingle but more like nerve endings misfiring or something. Hard to explain. Anyway, they took me off it. I was happy with the results until the side effects creeped in. Posts: 51 Mar 22 12 8:35 AM	Hi distantsmoke, I was originally diagnosed with major depression and the Effexor seemed to help for awhile; however, it made me manic. Soon afterward, I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder (BD), which corrected the previous diagnosis of major depression. It sounds like you may possibly be exhibiting manic or hypomanic behavior, but I am not a doctor. If someone who is depressed is prescribed an antidepressant without a mood stabilizer, it can possibly make that person manic if they really have BD instead of just major depression. You can google "antidepressant induced mania" for more information. I would also research the symptoms of BD to see if you identify with any of the manic symptoms. Here is one link, and there are many other websites that cover this: http://www.nimh.nih.gov/h...f-bipolar-disorder.shtml It took two years from the time I started taking Effexor for the doctor to recognize that I actually have BD instead of major depression and that the Effexor was making my mania worse. After I read about the symptoms of BD, I was shocked to see how many applied to me. For me, taking a mood stabilizer has helped immensely. By the way, if you do ever discontinue taking Effexor, make sure the doctor has you taper off of it very slowly. I had an awful time getting off Effexor, and it took me almost two months to do so. Posts: 65 Mar 22 12 9:38 PM	DISTANT SMOKE, Please tell your doctor that you have been "CHATTY" ,,,,if you still are. Some medications can make you "chatty" or even manic. I took Effexor, and then I was put on Effexor-Extended Release, but extended release made me EXTREMELY CHATTY, and EXTREMELY HAPPY. I was scared because I had never been so happy................too happy.......the doctors later took me off the extended release as they claimed that I was manic. Please just talk to your psychiatrist!

Posts: 65 Mar 22 12 9:42 PM	SERGEANT, I am in agreement with most of everything that you said. It does sound manic,,,,being chatty. Sergeant, what mood stabilizer do you take? I am diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder, and I take Clonazepam, Seroquel, Paxil, and Lamictal.

Posts: 196 Mar 23 12 11:40 PM	I had my appt. I explained about the chattiness, but I also had to explain about the the down-ness I had been experiencing. She chose to increase my dose of Effexor from 150 mg(?) by another 75 mg. I don't have the additional pills yet. I will give them a try, but I will also pay attention to what is happening with me. Hopefully it won't make things worse. These things are so hard, because every one of us has to try a different cocktail of drugs to find what works for us as individuals. At the very least I have to admit the Effexor has gotten me out of bed. Thank you all for your replies. It does help to know what effect the drug has had on other people.

Posts: 236 Mar 26 12 2:39 PM	I'm on Effexor-Extended Release and I take Clonazepam and I am on the 75mg Fentanyl patch (for pain). The combination of the Clonazepam and Fentanyl seem to slow me down a bit. I thought I was taking speed after taking Effexor and the the extended release made me run smoother. I still get hyper at times. But my diagnosis is GAD with Anxiety. It's all in our heads and that's where it hurts the most!

Posts: 52 Apr 5 12 10:22 AM	Effexor has not been kind to me. Total loss of appetite, constipation, sexual dysfunction... increased anxiety or periods of feeling very emotionally flat ranging to periods of severe depression. Going to ask the VA to switch me back off at my appt tomorrow.

Posts: 324 Apr 10 12 5:30 PM	If you take some Lamictal and Xanax with the Effexor, I bet that you won't be so chatty.I take that along with Dilaudid and Tylenol #4 and I can go all day without saying a word. Actually, everyone around me can talk all day and I don't care one bit, ha ha.

Very scary. Posts: 273 May 6 12 3:17 PM	Effexor ER didn't work for me. I took it for almost a year and it was causing me chest pains. I never had the suicidal thoughts, but my understanding is that is a common effect of the drug. My doctor changed my meds to citalopram (a generic for Celexa). Everything is good now.
