We had our first visit with him this past weekend .He is/was 16, highly hipper in school , the teachers wanted him calmed down to a zombie with drugs (Rittlen) we said no . They pushed until we couldn't take it any more .Considered military school ( very expesnive) .A principal of a school on anoher forum told me about the attached progarm .In case some of you have kids or grandkinds with issues I highly recommend you look into it . I was very impressed with all the young adults ,degreed teachers and drill sargents in this program . http://www.ngycp.org/site/

Posts: 78 Feb 29 12 10:00 PM	Absolutely steer any and all kids away from Ritalin and the like as they are chemically almost identical to meth and hence pose a much greater addiction risk (the ol' gateway drug brought to you by big pharma and your pediatrician...grrr). If the kids at any age are pegged as adhd/add or any of the other "easily applied but tough to remove" labels it may simply be an issue of exercise. Think about it: these 'conditions' didn't exist when we were younger because we were not planted in front of the TV/PC/Xbox/etc. We were out burning off steam after being tossed outside to go get some fresh air. I found a reference to a study done at the University of Buffalo (couldn't find a link to the actual study but I'm sure it's out there somewhere) that basically says kids need physical activity (duh...) to counter the symptoms of ADD/etc. We never allowed our kids to be labeled but I'm sure they could have been had we let it happen. Younger son competed at world level and needed to train EVERY day for 3-5 hours. When he stopped, he became an instant 'jackass' (ADD-wise). He'd start training again and it was gone. I guess the moral is that rather than spend $$ on programs or (God help us) medicate them, find an aerobic sport that he likes and get him involved with it. It's a real thing, and has been recognized for several hundred years since first clinically described. During those years when I should have been "growing up," I was a ward of the state at a very nice charitable facility that was filled with ADDers who had gotten into serious trouble with the law. When the staff at a program understand ADHD, the programs can be adapted to help them grow up well. Some don't. Most do. Few use meds, and the meds have changed. Speed is no longer the only drug available, and zombie behavior is now a relic for the history books. Some of the young'uns more so hyper than others but it's really just a matter of learning how to live with it, deal with it, and nurture the good. The worst one was my younger brother's son, damn was he a handful. Teachers/Principals all said "put him on valium or ritalin, or whatever.'' His parents wouldn't do that and thanks to the Lord for their wisdom. Of course, he turned out just fine when he grew up, but if they had listened to the teachers and "know it alls," he would probably be "numbed out" today, perhaps a vegetable even. I believe in letting children, esp boys, dig, and become their ownselves. Things will mostly work out and run the natural course.

Personally, the speed drugs helped me, and others, but I knew from decades of experience that ADHD is NOT a "problem"--the constant "corrections" sap a young man's spirit: social expectations (which don't include fast-thinking, fast-acting people) are the problem. Read up on the Hunter/Farmer model of ADHD authored by Hallowell. I simply told my kid's teachers that "you already know how to teach him--so continue to do so. We shall NOT label my boy as "different" but we will appreciate his talent for fast-thinking, tolerate his motor-mouth without degrading him, and allow him to explore every book and every machine he can get his hands on." Let it work its way out, who the hell ever said being a parent or a teacher or a preacher, or life for that matter, is supposed to be easy. On second thought, since my wife's family has three Preachers in it, I take back the comment on the preachers, they do actually have it pretty easy (and expect it that way).

So I racked up a few "Miranda"warnings to go along with a few extra medals as well. All in all, I made the most out of it, and I only quit when Gen McPeak said that all the "promotable/fun" jobs would go to pilots only. As a civilian, I got diagnosed and took the drugs. If I had been diagnosed and Ritalin'ed up in the service, I'd probably be the fucking Chief of Staff of the US Space Force by now. (OK. My daughter refused and told them basically the same thing VABA and herdgrunt recommended. Today, he is still only 11 but has been out of the hyper stage for the last two years, never having used any medication. It scares the hell out of me how many kids might be getting medicated unnecessarily! If the Veterans of our country followed up their promises as the Politicians have, we would all be speaking English as a 2nd language!

We had all the DX's etc and gave them tothe teachers every year so they understood. Finally in 6 th grade had this big fat bimbo teacher, who told me in a conference that he was a rocket scientist (sarcastic). She never bothered to read the reports, didn't believe in that stuff.
