My son was awarded 10% for Follicular Thyroid Cancer.  He had both thyroids removed and has to take the pill everyday--hence the 10%.

He was on active duty and months away from deployment.  His unit thought he was faking it and treated him like shit.  It didn't get any better since he was in a combat arms unit and put on (forget what they call it) where you can't do anything.  All the upper echelon let him know they thought he was worthless.  So they cut one out and took a biopsy of the other and then decided a few weeks later the other needed to come out to.  They even kicked him out before his convalascence was up.  The VA picked up on that and paid him 100% for that time though even though he was out of the Army by then.

He was also awared 50% for Bi-Polar disorder.  He was always a bit hyper, but after the Thyroid was gone he went a bit wild to say the least.  Guns, knives, bats, batons, locks in socks, etc.  Never left the house without something.  Always hyper vigilant, always paranoid, etc.  So, ya he was A.D. while they were removed.  The Army didn't even Med-Board him, just booted him out.  Of course he signed the paper waiving his right to an MEB because of all the crap they were giving him, but in the end, the VA took care of him.
