Posts: 42 Dec 7 11 7:13 AM	In 2012 the Institute of Medicine (IOM) will update and add new illnesses, diseases associated with AO. They do this update every two years. Does anyone have any insight into which new diseases will be added, or the time of year when this will be done?

Posts: 375 Dec 11 11 2:31 PM	When I had my C&Ps in Sep/Oct the doctor and I were talking about hypertension and other heart diseases not covered under AO. He said that there would be another announcement made by the VA in Feb. He wouldn't say what it was going to be about, just said it would be in late Feb.

Posts: 542 Dec 11 11 3:52 PM	There is absolutely 'no way' to know what illnesses will (ever) be added to the list of presumptives for herbicides. Personally, I believe there are still some residuals (secondaries) that potentially could be included in the 'final list'. We have all exhausted many hours discussing those 'residuals' and know what they might be. As with any government funded study, or announcements; we'll know when we know. Yes, the 2012 Agent Orange update will be the last. So, the study will conclude in 2012, and as Lou states, will be released some time in the summer of 2013. Sgt. BB, I didn't say the doc said it would be about AO. He just said there would be another statement coming out in late Feb. He wouldn't say what it would be about when I asked him, just said to be alert for one coming out.

Posts: 24 Jan 8 12 12:07 PM	I testified before the IOM AO commission on sept 27, 2010. It would appear that the 2012 update will follow a similiar schedule. I do know that some diseases that are being looked at are AUTOIMMUNE DYSFUNCTION which I testified on which includes AUTOIMMUNE DISEASES AND AUTO INFLAMMATORY DISEASE. Also birth defects, miscarriages, still births, etc for children of male veterans is another important topic mentioned in 2010 meetings and writeup. I do not know if I will be invited again to speak . I do know that all testimony NOW WILL BE RECORDED AND ARCHIVED FOREVER. I do know that the IOM STOPPED DOING THIS in 2008-2009-2010 BUT AFTER MY EMAIL last year they will not let this important testimony to be lost ever again. I hope to hear something from dr. paxton soon and hopefully invite me back to testify under oath.

Posts: 7750 Jan 8 12 10:25 PM	FTP is correct. The IOM has no authority to add anything. Their responsibility is to examine available research and classify 'conditions' and 'diseases' in one of 5 catagories. This report is then published. The Secretary is required to review this report. He can accept or reject the IOM opinion. Most recently the IOM in the 2008 report found sufficient evidence of an association between herbicide exposure and hypertension but the Secretary declined to include HTN stating the studies the IOM used were questionable. The Agent Orange Act of 1991 outlines the DVA responsipilities It states: "(2) In making determinations for the purpose of this subsection, the Secretary shall take into account (A) reports received by the Secretary from the National Academy of Sciences under section 3 of the Agent Orange Act of 1991, and The Act can be found here: http://www7.nationalacademies.org/ocga/laws/PL102-4.asp Regards; SteamJockey, resident curmudgeon 50 years service to the Navy and the nation.

Do you have a link that states that is so? There was another condition several years before but I forgot which. It wasn't PAD. Of cholesterol causes IHD and that is caused by liver dysfunction, how can they say it is not the same cholesterol. I don't get it. What are you trying to say? Posts: 407 Jan 10 12 5:20 AM	Never have seen any of the Vietnam Vet. disease studies show any correlation of higher incidence or increased disease risk associated with cholesterol levels and AO. Does AO raise cholesterol blood levels in the body or cause cellular gene DNA replication damage in the endothelial cells of the lining of cardiac arteries thus causing IHD? Sure had a high kill rate with my new experimental Agent Orange mix this year for our development property above Lacamas Lake and Camas. The 1%s are keeling over like flies. Also worked well on the poison hemlock, tanzy ragwort and Canadian thistles the county weed board keeps ragging about. Total kill of all vegetation.

The VA has started approving "Herbicide Exposure" claims in Thailand. Commercial Herbicides have been used on military bases all over the world for years. Is this opening "Pandora's Box" for thousands of additional claims ?

Posts: 12936 Jan 16 12 9:42 AM 10,000 plus post...	As to cholesterol, let's not talk about the obese person with CAD but rather the normal person. I had my first MI in 1975, 30 years old, 170 lbs, 5'11" and physically active. No history of high cholesterol in the family. The IOM has concluded that dioxin have caused genetic damage but don't really understand the science behind that. They really only know that statistical evidence points to AO causing CAD. We know today that the body makes cholesterol and the liver eliminates it. We also know that liver dysfunction is a large factor in high cholesterol. All the statin drugs are designed to increase liver function. It is my premise that genetic damage has caused this liver dysfunction as well as possibly causing the body to increase production of cholesterol. Then VA doesnnotbcompensate for an illness but rather for damage caused by the illness. CAD is the illness IHD is the damage. Cholesterol is the cause of CAD. Not all people with CAD have PAD but I would bet that all people with PAD have CAD because the cause is the same, arterial build up due to cholesterol. The VA says insufficient evidence but how many people claim PAD unless it is totally debilitating. Most people don't know they have it and until it is severe. I had pretty severe PAD by age 32 and totally debilitating by 36.
