Who Is Covered Under TSGLI?

Every member who has SGLI also has TSGLI effective December 1, 2005. TSGLI coverage is also provided retroactively for members who incurred severe losses as a result of traumatic injuries incurred between October 7, 2001 and November 30, 2005, if the injury were incurred in Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) or Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF), regardless of whether they had SGLI coverage at the time of their injury.

Effective October 1, 2011, TSGLI will be payable for all qualifying injuries incurred during the period October 7, 2001 to November 30, 2005, regardless of where they occurred, and regardless of whether the member had SGLI coverage at the time of the injury. The Veterans’ Benefit Improvement Act of 2010 removes the requirement that injuries during this period be incurred in Operations Enduring or Iraqi Freedom.


One of the things to keep in mind is that if a Veteran was injured between the dates in 2001-2005, and did not have SGLI, if their injury occured in the combat zone or designated areas, they are still eligible for the TSGLI coverage. Now, for those who were injured, but were not in a combat zone, 2001-2005, will also be eligible. If a Veteran or service member was injured between 2001-2005 say for instance in CONUS, and did not have SGLI, they are not covered.

Sorry,my explanation earlier was ass backwards. Because my injury occured before 12/2005, and was in CONUS, I was not eligible. If anyone has had an injury anywhere in the world since 12/2005 and meet the TSGLI physical requirements, they are covered. I already submitted my claim because my loss of DLA was after a surgery I needed because of the accident and the surgery was 2/2006. Denied because the accident happened before 12/2005. October 1, I do not have to reapply, they will automatically review all claims that were denied because of the geographical location.
