I saw an article in todays paper that the army will start to award Purple hearts to those who recieve concussions with no blood drawn , could purple hearts be awarded for other injury's like PTSD ??? AO??? gulf war syndrome ??? is this far behind ???

I would hope so. Grievous head injuries and battle damage clearly of record should have a Purple Heart Award. They've earned the recognition.

Anyone that has went to a war zone should be awarded a Purple Heart simply for the reason they never come back in one piece mentally or physically. Enjoy Life!!

I don't think that this is really anything new. The issue is whether or not the injury is due to enemy action. For example, in WWII I believe that anyone who suffered from severe frostbite while a prisoner of war was awarded the Purple Heart, but someone who suffered frostbite while not in enemy hands did not; the difference being that one was directly caused by the actions of the enemy who was holding you captive while the other was not.

I could be wrong on this, but I believe this is factual.

" A physical lesion is not required; however, the wound for which the award is made must have required treatment by a medical officer and records of medical treatment for wounds or injuries received in action must have been made a matter of official record. When contemplating an award of this decoration, the key issue that commanders must take into consideration is the degree to which the enemy caused the injury. The fact that the proposed recipient was participating in direct or indirect combat operations is a necessary prerequisite, but is not sole justification for award. The Purple Heart is not awarded for non-combative injuries.

Enemy-related injuries which justify the award of the Purple Heart include injury caused by enemy bullet, shrapnel, or other projectile created by enemy action; injury caused by enemy placed land mine, naval mine, or trap; injury caused by enemy released chemical, biological, or nuclear agent; injury caused by vehicle or aircraft accident resulting from enemy fire; concussion injuries caused as a result of enemy generated explosions.

Injuries or wounds which do not qualify for award of the Purple Heart include frostbite or trench foot injuries; heat stroke; food poisoning not caused by enemy agents; chemical, biological, or nuclear agents not released by the enemy; battle fatigue; disease not directly caused by enemy agents; accidents, to include explosive, aircraft, vehicular, and other accidental wounding not related to or caused by enemy action; self-inflicted wounds (e.g., a soldier accidentally fires their own gun and the bullet strikes their leg), except when in the heat of battle, and not involving gross negligence; post-traumatic stress disorders;[4] and jump injuries not caused by enemy action."

It is kinda like being shot at and missed and Chit at and hit. It used to be a special unit to wear a Beret, know everyone wears one. I would just love to have my 18 year old body back, but won't happen. Enjoy Life!!

I think you are right on this Cruiser. I have a friend who was blown out of the water in WWII (he is 88) and they just awarded him a Purple Heart, at the suggestion of his VA Doctor. He told me he didn't bleed, but his Son in Law who is a vet. ask about it and the VA agreed therefore he got his Purple Heart.

Mr. G4777, I read that the Marines also want to give the Purple Heart for concussions. I've found that the Purple Heart medal for Agent Orange to be very interesting topic. I ran into a guy one time that received a Purple Heart for cutting his foot on a can lid when running out of an APC without his boots or socks on, so there is a lot to say about how honest a person is about receiving a Purple Heart. I do believe though that Vets that are experiencing health problems from AO should receive some type of award though, as you could say that the spraying of AO was chemical warfare. One person wrote that some of the Vets had already been exposed to AO since they were raised on the farm. Well, if so, the AO was diluted with water, whereas, the AO sprayed in Nam was not diluted. As I was saying, I do believe that Vets with AO should receive a medal, and I believe I came up with a good suggestion, as I have told some Vets, and people about it. The idea is to take the Purple Heart and redo it for AO Vets. Where the ribbon is purple, it would become orange to represent AO, and the white trim would become black, to honor our brothers who have died from exposure to AO. The medal would still have the same shape as the Purple Heart, and have the cameo of George Washington on it, but this ribbon would be given to the Vets who have come down the AO.

I believe that they have made the Purple Heart to some kind of a Taboo. Times change, things change, people change. Some folks change for the better, others for the worst. I am just wondering is they are going to start to give away the Medal of Honor award to any thing other than extreme bravery above and beyond the call of duty. Who knows? Perhaps you do not have to be gun-ho any longer. If they use to jump on top of a grenade protecting their comrades, now maybe all the have to do is run like hell.

Awards have already gone to hell, look how many 1SGs & CO's get Bronze Stars, because they were the 1st shirt & Co, and Platoons Each have to pick out 1 soldier to get a Bronze Star, and 4 to get an AAM, at the end of a combat rotation. From my 22 years Active & National Guard, I only have a few awards I hung on to, the rest of the awards & the paperwork to go along with them, got shitcaned, some right after I got them.

Fight for every little bit of your life back. Don't let them win.

Just my own opinion which amounts to little. I have a Purple Heart for multiple fragmentation wounds. I also had a concussion in combat and am compensated for heart disease presumptive to agent orange.

I don't have a problem with someone who had a concussion from enemy action receiving a Purple Heart. TBI victims should certainly receive the PH as long as it was incurred from enemy action. Some of the TBI incidents are just devastating to the soldier and their family. Agent Orange is another matter. I can't see where being a presumptive victim of agent orange is worthy of a PH. Very few can actually prove their medical condition was truly caused by AO. I know that I couldn't prove it for my own IHD.

I believe it is being awarded for TBI, which can be tested and diagnosed.
It often leaves permanent significant damage. It is more or less the trademark wound of the current conflicts from IEDs.

Concussion is pretty weak.
Agent Orange related conditions are basically presumptive in nature and are not the result of enemy action.

In my time a PH required a medivac-I got GSW both legs and a bullet still in one lung. On PH as it was one fight.

Later got my scalp opened up by mortar frag needing about 20 stitches.
Team medic did the work on site - no PH.
One was plenty.

I had both of my ear drums blown out blowing up a V.C. tunnel complex (didn't quite make it out the hole when it went off) does that count?

I believe that would come under friendly fire,those of us who have served in combat seen many injured and killed from accidents,friendly fire as i stated in previous post that is why we received combat pay and the combat ribbon,is that enough for fighting for our country only each individual veteran can answer that question.
