I have over 16 good years in the National Guard, which includes over 8 years active duty including 1 year in Iraq. Recently received 80% service-connected VA disability rating (including 40% for back injury from active duty accident). Im still on active drilling status with the Guard and have a P2 profile that prevents me from doing sit-ups and requires me to walk rather than run. Although I would like to complete 20 years in Guard so I would be eligible for concurrent receipt, Im afraid that at my next National Guard physical I will be forced out for medical reasons. If this occurs, my understanding is that I will be given two options: (a) go before MEB or (b) leave Guard with 15-year letter that allows me to retire at age 60. Going the MEB route seems like a gamble since I may get less than 30% rating from Army in which case I believe I would be separated from military with separation pay but no retirement. Also, would I have to return to active duty during the MEB/PEB period? Should I notify Guard of the 80% VA rating or just let it ride until the Guard makes an issue of it?
