Rookie VBNer Posts: 7 08/02/07 11:25:14	Hi, My name is Will, I am an active duty Marine with 11 years of service and 1 combat tour in Iraq. I have just been referred to a PEB for Type II BiPolar disorder. Will the Board also consider my other problems? Nerve damage and plate in face, Tendon and nerve repair in right hand, PTSD, General Anxiaty disorder, insomnia? I don't really know much about this whole process. I am trying to research as much as I can now before the board goes. Any other suggestions are comments are also welcome. Thanks

The Board will consider your other conditions but you will only be rated for them if they are unfitting (that is, if separately they keep you from reasonably performing the duties of your grade and MOS). The Marine Corps and the Navy use SECNAVINST 1850.4E as the regulation for their PEB. I have written much more on this topic at the PEB Forum website, listed below in my sig block. Posts: 159 10/17/07 22:08:06	You have to weigh the pros and the cons. Right now you are being recommended for temporary retirement (with 50% pay due to TDRL). The plus is that you have all the benefits of retirement while on TDRL and the possibility of future permanent retirement. The down side is if you feel you should be rated higher than 30%, if you demand a formal you could possibly be downgraded. Also, remember, you can only get rated on your re-exam for unfitting conditions you have when placed on TDRL. Under current law, since you have less than 20 yrs, you will have to offset any VA compensation with your military retirement. There is a push to change the concurrent receipt law, but for now if you have less than 20 yrs, you can't get it. Without knowing more facts it is hard to give any further advice. Many would consider TDRL a win, but depending on the facts of your case, the evidence, what they rated you on and what they excluded, you might be better served by demanding a formal.
