(Result) Patriotic duty Family tradition Education benifits Work experience Travel (remember FTA? Fun, Travel, and Adventure) Nothing better to do at the time All of the above Judge said that or jail I didn't, I was drafted. None of the above

Posts: 16 Nov 28 10 7:24 AM	I selected "none of the above" but I guess it was more for education reasons. I graduated HS in 87 and had a few things I knew I must do (in my own mind). 1. Get out of the house and make something out of my self w/o the parents 2. Prove to myself that I could, (my Dad was an Army draftee) 3. Expand my options, I was upset that I couldn't get any scholarships, and wouldn't ask for any parental assistance

Boy that was a close one. 26 years later retired after 1 win, one tie, and no loses. Posts: 48 Apr 13 11 4:03 PM	I was in the process of being drafted. I had finished college and while at school got a deferment by taking a test. The local draft board thought that was not fair, so they were pushing me for the draft. I even had to take the physical. I was married, with one child and one on the way. So I elected to go USAF Officer Training School, was commissioned on Nov 5, 1963. A little more than twos later the President had been assasinated. Man o man, I thought we were in for it. Well, I got out 26 years and 21 days later. It was a great run, I enjoyed it, but knew it was time to go. Things were changing, and changing in ways I did not like. So I hung it up.

Posts: 170 Apr 16 11 11:56 AM	I am what you would call an "in-between patriot" 18 yrs old and working in Manhattan, New York City from the Bronx received a register letter with one subway token to report to Fort Hamilton, Brooklyn New York induction center according to lottery birthdays that were announced on TV. Took all the physical and written exams, while walking out of the induction center was given the other subway token to go home, I was told that I would be gone within 30 days to make arrangements. Somewhere in-between the 30 days I received a letter from the Navy to join then I went over to the local Naval recruiting station and was told that I would be given 2 years which they called "volunteer for the draft" I took the bait since there was a war that I didn't believe in. At least I had a conscience that "somebody had to do it." If we all ran away like some did that ran to Canada or became Hippies and live in communes so they won't receive that register letter because they knew that they had freedom of movement according to our constitution. The letter never reached them. They waited the war out. Later this people was given a pardon by President Carter and some today are part in running our country and some call themselves patriots. I am S/C 80% IU because of an Illness that almost took my life and ruin it for life because of the Draft----If I had to do it again I would serve regardless of what happened to me "somebody has to do it" No regrets----Love my country. Posts: 173 Jun 16 11 3:57 PM	My response is an honest one and I mean no disrespect nor do I want to appear arrogant. I am and will always be a patriot. But, I am an honest person and I will respond honestly. I enlisted straight out of high school. My motive was self interest. I was poor kid from Alabama with no future. I was looking for a way out of poverty. I was a ambivalent about the war in Nam. I was aware of the GI Bill and the benefits it offered to young men who served. Additionally, honorable service meant one would receive points or preference on exams for government jobs. So, the way I saw it, I entered into a deal with the government to provide my services and in return the government would reward me. I'd say the deal was mutually beneficial for the both us, the government received my services and I got a college degree and a government job in law enforcement for 33 years.

Posts: 17 Apr 3 12 9:36 PM	My best friends were getting killed in fast cars. I was broke. 12,000 miles from home seemed like a good idea at the time. As it turned out, meeting a lot of guys I'd never have met and trusting them and respecting their judgment made it a good place to be at the time. And afterward, the GI bill and a college education were unexpected gravy.
