Posts: 494 Jun 6 12 11:44 PM	I met the VA Board of appeals on a few issues, one being follicular thyroid cancer. I claimed AO and the oil well fires that just soaked the area just south of Kuwait,,,, esp. noteworthy was the major weapons stash that the army blew up Mar 4 just after the war..... full of really bad chemical weapons,,,, that got mixed in with the petrochemicals and the sirens went off. Look up the reasons for thyroid cancer and it flat says the environment is a factor when toxins are in the air.... dirtbag GOOD Luck

Posts: 494 Jun 11 12 10:04 PM	There was a report about folks in NYC filing for all types of cancer for breathing the dust after 9/11. Just think what the VA makes us jump through for any service connection for a cancer. Now wish I had this "factoid" about NYC and breathing the dust for any and all types of cancers when I went in front of the VA Board. Just thinking of the Sarin-Mustard gas- etc. bio logic weapons mixed in with the petrochemicals we spent months in,,,,, any of you filing out there should look into how the 9/11 folks are getting their compensation. I think it is too late since I met the board, even if it will be another 10-12 months before they tell me I was denied. dirtbag

Posts: 1 Jan 9 13 3:04 AM	Medullary Thyroid Cancer: I returned from Iraq November 2007, after being there for 15 months. Early 2007, I begun to get tired easily and running outdoors became harder and left me with a sore throat. When I returned to Bragg the doctors blew me off when I knew something was not right with my body. It was not until I PCS'd to Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio that I was diagnosed in October 2008 with Medullary Thyroid Cancer. I ended up having a complete Thyroidectomy, at which time the surgeon and his team discovered that the cancer had metastasize to my lymph nodes; resulting in me having to have all the lymph nodes on the left side of my neck removed on 08 DEC 08. As a result I must take .100mg of Synthroid Monday through Thursday & .112mg of Synthroid Friday through Sunday for the rest of my life. ***No one in my family has/have had cancer.

Posts: 494 Jan 20 13 12:52 PM	Because you were active duty, they have to give you a rating of ???. But what caused it? One fact in the medical books is "toxic environment", and that is what I filed my claim on. will certainly post on here the final appeal when I get it from Washington..... dirtbag

Posts: 494 Mar 1 13 12:13 PM	A few months back it came to light that 9/11 NYC folks were given presumption for Thyroid Cancer to include Follicular . Found out that one specific thing is a leading cause of thyroid cancer, "toxic environment",,,, gee, how about GW1 Mar 4th plume of Saran/mustard/etc. was dumped into the atmosphere above Kuwait and ENE Saudi Arabia (King Fahd for instance). I dang sure think an area where the visibility was l/2 mile due to the oil fires and then throw in some Saran agents into the mix (sirens went off), yeah folks.... toxic environment for sure. Will see what the Appeal Board in Washington says over the next few years.... will sure keep VBN informed! dirtbag

Non ionizing radiation has been shown to cause single and double strand damage to DNA, which would be a first step in the formation of cancer. Does that mean my thyroid cancers were from non ionizing radiation? I might think so but the majority of the medical community would not agree at this point in time because the studies need more study. I hope you win, but I just don't think the science is there just yet to state the cause to a 50/50 chance. Go Cougs! 100% TDIU P&T SSDI USN

I spent a few months in that extremely toxic environment and why shouldn't I put two and two together? Just as likely as not that may have been a cause???????????? We will see what the BVA says one of these years............. dirtbag

Posts: 7 Mar 3 13 6:49 PM	I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer and biopsy showed only left lobe, but I had total thyroidectomy in January 2011, the doctor said it would be safer to take out both sides. after that i went to the hospital for iodized radiation and later a full body scan. at this point, i am told that I am cancer free. later that year i went through 45 days of radiation for prostate cancer also homone therapy. as of this date, psa is excellent. cancer free on both scores at least for now. still haven't received completion of my claim filed april 11, 2011, but do have a C&P scheduled for March 7, 2013. It's been a very long wait. good luck to you and your husband.

That would be better known as electromagnetic radiation or "radio waves". While there are studies that suggest this type of radiation can damage DNA in a way that can lead to the development of cancer, that does not mean my thyroid cancer was due to this. The studies in this area are too few and not widely accepted by the medical community. I think your claim is in the same situation. While I have no doubt you were exposed to really nasty stuff that may indeed cause cancer of the thyroid, that does not mean the medical community is ready to agree. Perhaps someday they will. Until they do agree, it really makes no difference what you or I think. Neither of us is a doctor with experience in the pathology of thyroid cancer. We can get so attached to our claim that it's easy to think we're right. I'm just trying to be objective when it comes to the science. I am of the opinion that the medical community is not ready to make the connection for either one of us based on the current state of accepted scientific knowledge. Again, I wish you well but I really believe you are fighting an uphill fight. I hope you prevail but I have my doubts. Go Cougs! 100% TDIU P&T SSDI USN

Posts: 494 Mar 31 13 3:31 PM	Just did a a full week of test and a body scan to check on my Follicular Thyroid Cancer, they (VA) called and said I am clean today of thyroid cancer with a few lymph nodes showing some swelling in my throat area. Going to pass that info to my private Doc and see what he says. one day at a time dirtbag
