Posts: 20 02/25/06 19:44:19	i`m currently rated 100% for prostate cancer and undergoing radiation treatment to be completed in march with a followup exam in april from a local cancer center. my questions are 1. in my letter from the va it states that after the treatment 6 months later residual disability is determined by findings from a va exam. the vso stated if the treatment is successful that my rating will drop to either 40% or 60% and if there are other problems i can file for special other compensation. 2. who does the report for the va. the cancer center doc or the local va doc. 3. also just got rated for db 2 and placed on medication. my vso informed me the the combined ratings would be 50% if rated at 40% for my prostate. is this accurate thanks.

Posts: 4359 02/25/06 20:16:42	You will have a C&P exam at the VAMC six months after the completion of your radiation. There are a variety of residual effects that will determine your rating, so it's really not possible to determine with any reasonable certainty what your rating might be six months down the road. You could be lucky and have no residuals. I would guess that your VSO is assuming a particular rating for the DM II, but his guess is as good as any. My first rating for Prostate Cancer was, like, 10 percent about two years after completing radiation in 1995. I had another biopsy two years post radiation and still had Prostate Cancer and was increased to 100 percent where I have remained since. So predicting what's up a few months down the road is pretty iffy IMHO. Posts: 4359 02/26/06 12:03:35	Nolespro, My radiation treatment was in 1995. PCa wasn't established as an AP-presumptive condition until May, 1996, when I applied. The first decision was in April 1997, and the biopsy showing continuing PCa was July 1997 and I filed a reconsideration and, finally, in April 1998 I was awarded the retro 100 percent. I then had a follow-up in July 2000 and found p&t. I have no idea what the current timeframes might be. Rookie VBNer Posts: 1 04/16/08 16:44:45	I filed a claim about two years ago after I had my prostae out. When I went to see the "VA" doctor I told them life was good. Life in most respects. I was back working and was functional after surgery, for the most part. They gave me no disability. My PSA came back last year and I filed for a reconsideration. I gave them information about my upcomming radiation treatment and other data showing my cancer had come back. They sent me in to see the VA Doctor again and she was very sympathetic. I have been waiting several months and the process seems to take forever. In that time I have finished my seven week course of radiation and I am starting to get back to a "normal" life again. I called them last week and they tell me I should hear back in 30 to 60 days. Life has changed since my radiation treatment and I have to wait another month to get a "PSA" reading to see if I my treatments worked or not. Questions (1) Is there anything further I should try to get them to "step it up" a little? It has been several months.. (2) What sort of percentage should I expect? Thank You for your help

You are correct, the process does seem to take forever and the waiting sux! Welcome to the VBN, the best site of it's kind! Rookie VBNer Posts: 2 06/04/08 23:28:15	They finally sent me an answer. I am 100% since I filed last November and for a period of time after my radiation treatment which was complete last month. They say I will be given a date for an examinatoin to determine if that rating changes. The check is in the mail....? They also back dated a payment of $86 per month for a loss of a "crative organ". I would rather have my health but I do think I was treated fairly. I have a few new issues since raditaion which I will bring up at the next Dr Appointment. The claim process took seven moths from start to finish. I started out with help from the American Legion. When the "VA" asked for extra paper work I sent it without any help. The American Leigion was not so happy about that and told me I was on my own after not using them EVERY step of the way. I have been told the process is easier if you go with a "VA" representative like the American legion, there are others. Anyway. I hope this information helps someone. Posts: 1 08/12/08 07:22:00	I filed my claim with VA on 30 May. The VSO told me I should get 100% for the month of May, but didn't say more. I had a radical prostatectomy on 24 April 08. What will I be entitled to? I read where you get 6 months at 100%, but if that's so, when will it start since I filed my claim after my surgery? I also have DMII and take oral medication for it. What type of compensation will I likely get for both these? Any assistance would be appreciated. I have my first VA appt on 22 Aug 08. They called me Friday and told me they had expedited my claim. Wonder why?
