Posts: 25 Feb 1 10 10:10 PM	Is it true that disabled veterns children get their college tuition paid for? I am a 23 year USAF retired member rated at 50% disabled (still apeaalingfor an additional 10% at BVA). Where do I find the information to start this process if it is true? I joined in Georgia while in college, home of record was Illinois when I joined, retired in Florida and live in Louisiana. My 24 year old son and 19 year old daughter live in Texas. Thanks for your help.

Posts: 215 Feb 1 10 10:43 PM	From the VA, you have to be rated 100% permanent and total for your dependents to be eligible for Dependents Education Assistance, usually referred to as Chapter 35. States veterans benefits vary from state to state, some are more giving than others. From my understanding of the Texas veteran education program, you, the veteran, must be from Texas. http://www.tvc.state.tx.us/Hazlewood.html My reading of the Louisiana rules are that you have to be 100% also for dependents to receive state benefits. http://vetaffairs.la.gov/education I'm not an expert, but there are a couple of web-sites for you to begin your research. Depending on when you were in, you may be able to transfer your GI Bill stuff to your dependents, but I am better versed in the Chapter 35 benefits than the GI Bill benefits.

Posts: 499 Feb 1 10 10:55 PM	Johnny, Here is an extract from your state's website: http://vetaffairs.la.gov/ "LOUISIANA’S TITLE 29 DEPENDENTS’ EDUCATIONAL ASSISTANCE This state benefit provides educational assistance to surviving spouses of certain deceased or disabled war veterans. The benefit also includes children of veterans rated with a 100% service-connected disability. In 1997, the benefit was amended to include children of veterans rated with at least a 90% service-connected disability. In 1999, the benefit was amended again to include children of veterans rated with a 100% service-connected disability due to individual un-employability." You'll need to check to see if their 100% (IU) service-connected rating is the same as the VA's or if they don't require that the veteran be P/T. UPDATE: What you have there is a jumble of states, homes of record, and post-retirement residences that I doubt any of us could sort out for you. There are many variables, even if you finally meet the rating percentage for one that might support this requirement. I also can't see how, even with a positive BVA outcome, that your kids would qualify under any states' program for education. You do have the link, above, if you want to check state by state, however. Sorry. Posts: 499 Feb 16 10 8:16 PM	Johnny, I just checked the Alabama page and their dependents of 20%-90% disabled veterans receive two college years of waived tuition at state-supported schools. Dependents of 100% disabled veterans receive four years of college. Since you're not associated with Alabama, you might consider a move to the state, but from what I read, you'll have to be a resident and pay taxes for five years before your dependents can file for this program. First off from the VA your children are authorized school benefits but moreover IF you entered the military in Alabama then your children are authorized more funds separate from the VA. Here is the facts about that. VETERANS' AND DEPENDENTS' EDUCATIONAL BENEFITS Alabama G.I. and Dependents' Scholarship Program I was able to take advantage of this for my 2 sons. One is now ending up a 6 year degree in engineering. He has kept an A average through out his whole college career and is on the deans list at the University of South Alabama. My other son is finishing up his A&P license.
