Posts: 1 Jun 26 10 8:13 AM	I was in the Army from "91"-"97". I went to Saudi Arabia in "91", during operation Desert Sentry. Since then I have had anger/bi-polar/depression issues; although it was not mentioned in my discharge ( I was medically discharged, but for physical reasons only). In "2000", or around that time, I finally decided to seek help; after closing myself off to the world and stayed in my bedroom, allowing nobody in or out for a week. After the week, I tried to go back to work (I was a sub-contractor, so it was easy to go back) but turned around and went back to bed after driving a mere 5 miles. I kept thinking about dealing with others and what I would do if I couldn't handle things while on the job. At that time I turned things over to the VA hospital and was diagnosed with mild to severe anxiety, later bi-polar and depression, and 1 year ago was diagnosed with PTSD with a GAF of 45. Sorry for the lengthy background. Anyways, I have requested and been denied for my PTSD claim (I am already 40% due to physical issues). I do have "The Order of the Purple Heart" representing me now, but still had a couple of questions. The ratings board acknowledged the PTSD and other mental disorders, but will not rate this as service connected because it was not during combat. Me and an Army friend of mine were in "Chop Chop Square" in Daharan, Saudi Arabia. I'll skip the incident, as it is long and irrelevent. When my findings for the claim came in, the claim was denied based on non-combat, and/or no records or substial evidence of service connection. Any suggestions or past experiences of what to do?

Posts: 2 Jun 27 10 12:53 AM	JayBlaze, I was wondering if you could email me? I have a couple questions to ask. I was honorably discharged back in 07. I did one 18 month tour, CIB, bronze star, etc. I have just recently gone to the va for some mental health issues and after my examination with one shrink ( psychologist or psychiarist, not sure which one) she said I have all the major symptoms of ptsd so she scheduled me an appt with another shrink next month. I was wondering how I go about filing a claim for ptsd. Do I have to go to the va or can I do it online, or what? I dont want a handout but after doing a bunch or reading on this site, Im begining to feel like it the right thing to do. Thanks rugger772002@yahoo.com

Posts: 107 Jul 24 10 12:52 PM	Just medically retired from the Marine Corps due to my PTSD. Now waiting for VA to give me a rating. How long does the BDD program take to do that cause its been 60 day since my retirement. Also, how do they view ptsd cases when vet is diagnosed on active duty?

Posts: 20 Aug 19 10 3:44 PM	Hello everyone. I am new to this site. I am 70% SC. My initial 30% was for adjustment disorder in Dec 2003. After 6 years of being treated for this issue my PCM at the VA stated I needed to put in a PTSD claim. I have read my letter from the rater saying my Adjustment disorder needed to be reviewed in 2008. I never heard a thing from the VA about another mental health visit, but in the meanwhile I was being seen in the PTSD clinic since 2004. Never to my knowledge did I think to put in for PTSD. Any way I have been having a hard year and my PCM told me again to put in for the PTSD. So early this year i did so. I would have done it earlier. My PTSD MD stated that an adjustment disorder is only to last no more than 6 months. Since 2003 I have gone through 6 types of meds and am currently on 4 meds at the same time. Has anyone had any exp with this? Will they pay me back pay for all the years I was dx with PTSD? It would help getting back on my feet. I put my claim in last March 2010. Any helpful info would be great.

Posts: 4 Aug 23 10 3:01 PM	I have 6 months left to retire from the Army Reserve (Mar 2011) but I am about to go through a MEB and PEB for injuries I sustained while deployed in Iraq. I currently receive 60% Compensation from the VA, with three claims still out. My question are; If I am medically retired from the Army Reserve will I be collecting a percentage of my retirement based upon my active duty years or total years of service? Will I be able to collect the Army disability concurrently with the VA Compensation, since by the time I get the Army retirement I will have 20 years under my belt, or will I have to give it up? Thanks….

Posts: 5 Aug 23 10 6:20 PM	I was in Vietnam from 1965-1970 with Special Forces and saw alot of disturbing images. My wife (#3) over the last ten years kept noticing different aspects of PTSD, but the first noticeable thing was "denial of PTSD", oh not me. Finally, she got me into the VET Center for indivudual counseling in 2005 and was originally granted 30% with a GAF score of 50. NEVER GIVE UP AND ALWAYS APPEAL has been our motto. Yesterday, I received two brown envelops (with the thought of denied again on our mind), and believe it, VA has given me an additional 20% with retro benefits back four years. This is action being taken for veterans with a clear diagnosis of PTSD that the President discussed a few weeks ago and issued a ACT NOW, NOT NEXT WEEK. I still have multiple health issues that haven't been decided by a hearing officer that will give me 100% and alot of backpay. Life will be easier. Good Luck to all.

Posts: 5 Aug 23 10 6:27 PM	Don't worry you will be hearing something from VARO soon. There is a new iniative that the President spoke about the vets and having to have stressor letters, etc. If you have a GAF score of 40% you want to apply for anxiety and depression secondary to the PTSD disorder. Many vets forget to apply for these secondary conditions. It all adds up especially if you continue individual counseling, on medications, or in group counseling. I would still appeal the first rating for more review with more new medical documentation.

Posts: 19 Nov 13 10 3:40 PM	I evidently have been given a diagnosis of P.T.S.D. by the VA. What is next? do they automatically do the paperwork for increasing my disability? I already have a over 40 for Diabetes and Neuropathy.

According to my local VA hospital, my brother who was jumped by seven guys on base and got stitches in Okinawa qualifies for P.T.S.D. He definitely has the symptoms.

Posts: 2 Nov 17 10 8:37 AM	Finally addressed symptoms of PTSD after 42 years . Initial psych evaluation at the local VA clinic verified PTSD. GAF 60 (?). this month. The Dr. recommended anti dep ression meds which I honestly am reluctant to take .I am also seeing a counselor at a local Vets Ctr. and submitted the letter to VA for a cliam through a county Vets office. Gathering info on what is ahead for treatment and claim realized my DD214 lacked the CAR I believe I am entitled to. I meet the criteria having served USMC VN 1/67-2/68 in I Corps.as a 0341 with 60mm mortars. In particular the experiences around Con Thien in the fall of 67 should satisfy the criteria.I fwd info to the Board for Corrections at the Naval Records in Wash.DC using form DD 149 and attached Command Chronologies from my Battalion for 2 mos that indicate actions involved in. ( Incoming artillery,mortars,rockets and a combat actions with the NVA on a number of dates. Also included were a list of Operations involved in during my whole tour ( from My personal records ) along with a page from a book that chroniced the battalions involvment that Sept/Oct 67. What I am asking is first off -do I need to send this info anywhere else ? ( St Louis) 2-Is the absence of the CAR on the DD 214 going to require me to present more info to VA and at what stage of the claim ? Since I came home(2/68) in retrospect there was PTSD symptoms I either denied or didn't realize. Since retirement it is a different situation. Any input would be greatfully appreciated. More than looking for compensation for the claim I am seeking an answer to why I am experiencing these symptoms now and how I can cope with them. Thank you.

Posts: 8 Dec 2 10 12:03 AM	If an active-duty member is involved in a serious accident (non-combat/off-duty) and later develops problems similar to PTSD, is that person eligible for a disability rating/compensation? Example: I was involved in a serious boating accident in 2002 and shortly after had problems similar to PTSD. I never discussed problems with flight doc because I wanted to continue flying. Docs documented anxiety and adjustment disorder, related to anger and family issues, but I never discussed the possible relation to the boating accident and PTSD. I didn't want flight doc to question my ability to handle an emergency on the jet or my ability to perform my work. Now I'm looking back at nearly 10 years of problems that may be related to PTSD and there is no diagnosis because I never sought help or asked what might be causing some of the problems I was experiencing.

As you get furthe into dealing with the matter, along with the help from a Doc, you'll be able to determine if it can be a SC issue and if you should file a claim? 03grunt

Posts: 78 Jan 8 11 3:15 PM	New to this but here go's. I applied for VA benefits 07/06/2008 was denied December 30, 2008. No medical records at all. Was in from 76-82, 2 page record ref. knee prior to entrance, and next record May 1982. Accident 01/18/1979, came away with Right knee condition, Hearing loss, sinus condition, Head injury with concussion, Migraine Headaches, Depression with anger, Tinnitus, Broken nose, and scars. Both hands injured in basic training. May 2009 was sent to C & P for head injury no one knows why. Got buddy letters together and sent them in in June and July 2009. Then as time ran out filed NOD December 2009. They had put the broken nose and scars on a different claim. In August 2010 I went to a C & P they concluded that by the evidence the injuries happen. 0% percent for scars by S/C. The nose 0 due to know residuals. Now on the 30th of December I saw a PTSD Dr. who stated I have PTSD from a TBI which happen in the accident. I just put in for that. I go for a 3 hour test in 2 weeks. There is a way I want to say this but my mind wont let me. I put in for SSDI and was rejected but I just put in for a reconsideration using Patricks information thank GOD for you. Really Thank God for all of you that have posted. Once I thought I was in the corner broken all alone, but here I found more like me and still alone but understanding why I am broken. My question is am I doing this the right way. God Bless

Posts: 1 Jan 24 11 8:50 PM	About 8 years ago, I was diagnosed with PTSD and was given 10% disablity. After 2 years of going back and forth with the VA, I decided that was probably all I would receive, best to go on with life. Over the years, other vets have told me they were getting up to 70 to 80% for this, that I should look into it. They gave me a name of a physiologist and I started going to sessions. I went for about 2 months but it was making me more depressed than ever. Anyone have any other ideas?
