Just curious how closely related are your GAF scores verses VA percentages. I have not been rated yet for mental health, however I am interested in what ratings have been assigned. I have a GAF of 55 for the last 7-8 months for PTSD (non- combat and/or depression (secondary to SC injuries).

I have read the PTSD notes and in the ratings section it states that (in most cases) a GAF of 55 is equal to ? percentage.

I just want to see in real life how closely related are the GAF scores.

So please share your diagnosis, Gaf score, and VA percentage...

gaf scores are only a small part of the picture in establishing a rating..

going just by a gaf of 55 maybe 10%

Albeit true that a GAF scores is not the final answer to a rating, it does however play a role. I have seen veterans with a GAF of 35 get 70%; and I have seen vets with a GAF of 55 get 100%.

First the vet with a 35 may have been at 60 for several years, and suddenly got worse. The vet with a 55 GAF may have fluctuated between 50 and 55 for a considerable amount of time and because his history shows he has not improved, and is likely to be granted more. It also depends on the triggers for a particular mental disorder to decide what rating one gets.

Every case and every rating officer is different. My PTSD is conbat related. I did a unusually long stressor letter (7 pages) that went into great detail. I also had about a year of psych records to back my claim. But, when I initially filed my claim, my GAF was 55. I ended up with 50% SC. Now, although my GAF was slightly high (I think my Navy shrink did that for me so I wouldn't get a med board and allowed me to retire) the documentation that I had was very detailed. I am also heavily medicated. If I wasn't medicated, I assume my GAF would be much lower. Anyway, it's really hard to answer that question. I think the FAQ for the PTSD forum does about the best job of explaining. Anyway, hope that helps a little

Sometimes the Psyhco/Social examination narrative and conclusions conflects with the GAF.

When they conflict, the raters seem to side with the write-up as the write-up provides more info.

It depends on a lot of variables. VA uses this as part of the determination,

The GAF scale is a scale
reflecting the "psychological, social, and occupational
functioning on a hypothetical continuum of mental health-
illness." See DSM-IV at 32

I have seen a GAF that varied from 40 - 45 monthly for the past three years. At present the disability percentage is 50%.
