A fellow Vet, retired Army Officer's step son was in Army Basic Training. Fell off wall 20 foot or so and landed so that back was injured. Durring first
aid, put on streacher and on way to medical when an Officer stopped the medics and asked this young man how he was doing? Young recruit barked "I'll
be o.k. but in a lot of pain Drill Sargent"!!!!! The Officer KICKED the streacher and said "I AM NOT A DRILL SARGENT, I AM AN OFFICER"!!!!!
Than when he got to the Medical Clinic, the medics said "You WILL walk into this clinc" and forced this young man to suffer the pain on the way in.
Bottom line, on the way to a civilian hospital after relizing the severity of his injuries, he asked the Ambulance EMT to use his cel phone and call family.
Over 24 hours later he had emergency surgery to fix lower back disk replacement (used his floating ribs as bone graph) and also had perferated kidney repair.
Family was able to be there for this young man and low and behold, a representative from his Boot Unit showed up and was very surprized to see family at the hospital ICU waiting for word from Doctors on if he would walk or not. His chain of command had not contacted family yet and it had been over 48 hours passed.
I am sure my friend will contact Legal and probly start IG but my question is... What kind of medical benifits and other rights does this young man have for future medical from Army. And will the VA treat him as a Vet with only a few weeks of active duty while in Basic? Thank you and have a nice day.
