Krukenbergs spindle is an early sign of Pigment Dispersion Syndrome (PDS) which is generally believed to be a genetic condition, but this isn't clear. With PDS small flakes of the colored part of your eye fall off and wander around in the liquid part of the eye, similar to what are commonly called floaters. These flakes accumulate at the bottom of the eye but don't generally cause any problems unless they clog the little drains that are located at the bottom of the eye.

As I understand it most folks don't suffer from any disability or functional impairment from PDS, although I think docs tell their patients to avoid really strenuous activities if you want to avoid knocking any more of those flakes loose than will come loose anyway. I guess you can't play in the NFL if you have PDS.

Of more concern with this condition is the fact that it can lead to glaucoma in a small percentage of people who have it; therefore, regular eye exams are a must. Increased intraocular pressure (IOP) is a sign of glaucoma so that is why they want to regularly check the IOP. Pain can be a symptom of increased IOP; therefore, if there is any pain it needs to be checked. On the positive side only a small percentage of people with PDS develop gluacoma and it generally causes no problems for the others.
