Hello Everyone,
Hope everyone's day is going well. I received TDRL 6 months ago from the USAF, Shaw AFB SC. I finally received my medical records...they were @ Randolph FOREVER..... Any info Anyone can share about the VS claim I have to put in now????? OR When/what will happen with the next board??? Any info on my Outfit...etc..... (tee hee) I was going to wear Blues...but someone said, YOU ARE RETIRED NOW>>>> Any Info??? Please

Muffy,

Welcome to VBN. It sounds like you're asking questions about 2 agencies here, 1) DoD, and 2) VA. So, I'll answer what I can.

1. Under TDRL you should have a reeamination around the 18 month mark.
2. TDRL is only good for 5 years.
3. After the exam the PEB will make a decision to either keep you on TDRL, move you to PDRL, put you back on duty, or give you severance.
4. Your best source of info for TDRL is http://www.pebforum.com

Now the VA stuff.

1. If you have a VA Regional Office in your town where you live, go there and seek out a VSO (DAV, AMVETS, VFW, etc) and file your claims through them.
2. Once the claims are filed, find a hobby. It will take a while.
3. Do NOT miss any exams for Compensation and Pension, doing so can cause you to lose your claim.
4. Feel free to ask any VA related questions you have here on VBN. We have various forums set up for various subjects.

And let you know that Brian gives Sound Advice.

Even tho his Avatar might not APPEAR to Give him that Credibility.

I would like to add one thing.

The Laws are that someone on TDRL must have an evaluation once every 18 Months.

Just don't be surprised if they schedule you MORE frequently than every 18 Months.

I had (3) evaluations within about 24 Months.

Muffy, also to piggy back on what survivir stated, just as he had 3 evals in 24 months, don't be alarmed if your 12 to 18 month window passes and they still have not scheduled you for your re-eval. Lately the Physical Evaluation Board has been backlogged for quite some time and so you may not be scheduled for a re-eval on your tentative 12 to 18 month anniversary date until possibly months later. This has happened to me personally and several other service members whom I know personally. Not to mention the veterans who have come to VBN to voice their concern on the issue.

Best piece of advice is to keep in contact with your appointed representative at Randolph and check in every few months on your status. Make sure your contact information is updated so they cannot pin failure to contact you as a means to revoke your TDRL benefits.

Also, I try to instruct to every individual on TDRL to keep a daily journal/log of your ailments and how it effect you. This will be of possible benefit to you at your re-eval as it provides the board with a daily log of your ailments, how they have affected you daily, and whether you have improved, worsened, or remained stagnant during the course of the time you've been placed on TDRL.

Keep up with your doc appointments and keep us updated on your status. Other than that, welcome to VBN. Congrats on the TDRL award, btw.

Thank yo so very much for your reply... as far as I know.... I haven't been given a Rep in Randolph... guess I need to go see the Guy on base then?? Yes, that's a question... (tee hee). Also, just now getting to the VA ... My records were "held up" in TX I guess..... Basically, I have NO CLUE... the VA Rep on base couldn't help me because I didn't have my records... then He couldn't help Me because I was ALREADY on TDRL... the VA downtown NEVER seems to be there... and I HAVE definitely been keeping my Doc appointments...except Sleep Apnea (because they sent their Appt to My OLD residence...) I moved when I went on TDRL.

It's especially frustrating because I have other "Things" going on than what They released me under TDRL.....and I just want someone to hear what I have to say and PUT me in the Right Direction. Just started figuring out the TRICARE thingy...WOW!!!

The WORST!!! I had an SEVERE ASTHMA attack at the Commisssary today... After I could...I had to walk myself over and get a box of tissues from the isle (with NO assistance...) Even tried to ask one "Wife" to "please get out of the way!!!!" She tried to shove Me...and told Me to F* off!!!

What Have "We" Become when Military (Active or Dependant) just don't care...??? AND BOTH WERE PRESENT!... Just walked away!!
I don't understand ANY of this... I was brought up in an "Air Force Family", My dad used to stop for any GI/Any Branch (He was Army & AF) on the Hwy... He's 91 now (32 yrs of service) and Blind/Deaf.... But He still loves his Military!!

I don't think people care anymore...and it's heartbreaking...because I do!! I was raised in a Mil Fam! To go through this today...REALLY makes Me think!! I don't have a Special Shirt that says..."Hey...I know Your Pain.."!!! But I SURE GOT MY EYES OPEN TODAY....

I don't think this is very "Military Family" and I think OUR Military has changed...

Thank you for the advise... I Guess It's a Different World Now"... I though, WILL STILL hold My Core Values Above ALL (I was raised on them...even did a paper on it in my Speach Class in Airman's Academy...Incirlik Turkey) and Help People in Need!!!

I am sorry to read about your experiences. Unfortunately as a disabled veteran, sometimes you will find that you will be minimized and discriminated for your disabilities, as there are those that just do not understand or comprehend your situation and experience. They have not walked in your shoes, have experienced the sacrifices you have made, or understand the difficulties you endure as you try to maintain your ailments the best that you can. Some individuals will even come across as indifferent to your service connected disabilities despite the sacrifices you may have made for this nation. Despite the circumstances you may find yourself in and the people whom you may have to deal with, never let any of it make you grow calice or jaded, as it is never worth investing bitterness into those who choose to misunderstand the sacrifices you have made while serving this great nation.

As far as Randolph AFB, if you haven't been assigned a rep, let me e mail you a contact whom you can call and find out some information. I had a rep who was actually very professional, yet also very courteous and friendly. Considering I was on TDRL for a full 5 years, I had to correspond with her numerous times, and each time she was very helpful with my evals. Perhaps she can help you find who it is you are assigned to, should you not be lucky enough to be assigned to her directly.

Again, keep up with the VA appoints to the best of your ability. You'll find that with the VA, some appointments are far and in between, so when you're scheduled an appointment, it is very important to keep it or else you may not have another for quite some time.

Take care and I'll e mail you my rep's contact info. Perhaps she can provide you with the info on who it is you are assigned to while on TDRL.

hello everyone....
I keep coming accross this forum in my research and found great info here so I thought I would join. I recently got the decision back to put me on TDRL status. I am tring my best to figure out what all this means and my liason at my base (RAF Lakenheath) admits she doesn't know much about it. Right now I am just stressing out over the transition itself. I know when i get back to NY one of my first stops should be the VA office. I was hopeing any of you might have some advice on transitioning. There wont be a militqary base any where near where I am going so I really will be doing most of this on my own.

Welcome to VBN. Check to see if the base has a VA rep so you can start your VA claim before you leave. If not, then go to the VA Regional office (VARO) when you get home and look for a Veterans Service Organization (VSO) like DAV, VFW, AMVETs, etc in the same building. Those are the people who will help you file your VA claims.

One thing to do before you leave the base is to make 2 complete copies of all of your medical records. 1 to keep and one to give to the VSO when you file your claims. Then all you can do is sit back and wait for the process to run its course.

As for the TDRL itself, you'll be reexamined every 18 months. After each examination the military will make one of a few determinations:

1. Keep you on TDRL
2. Move you to the Permanent Disability Retired List (PDRL)
3. Return you to duty.
4. Put you out on a medical discharge with severance. Do NOT under any circumstances accept this option.

Once you get your VA rating it is very likely you will not get much backpay from the VA as they are required to take $1 of your retirement pay for every $1 of VA compensation. Depending on your VA rating and your rank and time in service you will likely never see your retirement pay again. There are bills in congress to fix this problem, but everything is up in the air right now. If your disabilities are from combat, combat training, or hazardous duty you are eligible for Combat Related Special Compensation (CRSC) which pays you back the money you pay to the VA from your retirement. However, there is also a math glitch which Congress has not addressed and could result in you being approved for CRSC, but not get any money from it.
