Posts: 98 May 20 09 10:11 AM	Tags : None Hello everyone on board. Will somebody please educate me on the ratings for the back and spine. I just had the results of my x-rays on my back and it came back with signs of cervical spondylosis. I don't have service connection for cervical spondylosis but I do have service connection for lower back pain rated at 20%. It just happened that my PCP sent me to x-rays because I had pain in my neck and I had headache. My questions brothers and sisters: Will I get rated seperately for cervical spondylosis if I claim it? Or will they just combine with my present rating on lowback pain? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. More power to this wonderful site.

Posts: 197 May 20 09 5:59 PM	I don't know if they will combine the two or not. Maybe not if they were two separate injuries.....don't know for sure. For me, they combined my cervical spine, thoracic spine, lumbar spine, right shoulder, bilateral hips, and bilateral knees all together and only gave me a total rating of 10%. But now my PCP says I'm disabled so got a claim going on that. Loss of range of motion plays into the spine and can boost your rating, along with residuals. Here is a link to the Electonic code of Federal Regulations. It's pretty lengthy, but read about Range of motion, Degenerative Joint Disease, and the Cervical spine toward the bottom of the page. Posts: 2033 May 20 09 8:59 PM	skicker, unless you are already service connected for the cervical issues most likely you are going to have to provide a nexus as to why you now have cervical injuries, i.e. did your lower back problems cause you to have an improper stance and or gait / walk that caused further pressure, instability, etc. to your total spine causing further problems. If you've been diagnosed with Degenerative Disc Disease along with your current service connected lower back that might cover it but if not you are going to have to show how it is service connected or secondary to your service connected issue. Posts: 349 May 20 09 10:34 PM	I have a rating of 30% lumbar spine and 30% cervical spine. I kept having complaints of my shoulder (documented in SMR) but x-rays were always negative. My VA PCP decided to have an x-ray (then later a MRI) of my cervical spine and it was determined that the pain in my shoulder (and arms) was due to cervical spine issues. If the issues you have are with another portion of your spine compared to a SC for a different portion of your spine you may be able to file for a SECONDARY issue. If part of your spine is messed up the other portions could be taking the brunt of daily life and lead to disability. Just my thoughts....wish you the best on your claim. Posts: 98 May 23 09 3:59 AM	I would like to thank everyone who shared their knowledge on the subject. I sure learned alot from all of your experiences. I am not SC for neck and cervical spine, although I initially claimed it but was denied. I am still within one year of my retirement and am SC for low back pain(20%). I retired 9 months ago. Can I still seperately claim for cervical spine spondolyasis? God bless you all.

There is a one year presumptive period for this type condition and since you are within one year of your retirement from military service there should be no problem. You said that you claimed a neck disability and it was denied. What was the condition claimed and what was the reasoning given for the denial? I'm assuming that VA did not have the medical evidence showing the spondylosis at that time. You can either submit a Notice of Disagreement with that decision and submit the new medical evidence or you can reopen the claim by submitting the new evidence and asking that it be reconsidered. It's hard to say which would be the best approach for you without knowing the reason for the prior denial. Cruiser
