I was in vietnam and I was diagnosed with pernisious anemia in the early 90's and diabetes in the mid nineties. I have had psoriasis since I can home from vietnam. I was wondering if there was a link between people with ( ( Psoriasis and Anti Malaria Medicine.)) If so where can I get the information to send with a claim or if I can file a claim on this.

Hey James: I was in Viet Nam in 69-70-central highlands-Bam Me Touit, Phan Rang, Delat, Gia Nhia.

In 2008 I too was diagnosed with pernisious anemia and two months later diabetes and high blood pressure. I am on monthly B12 shots now. Was originally once a day shots. When first diagnosed with the anemia, I was put into ICU for two days with multiply blood transfussions. Thought initially it was lukemia.

I dot the 20% for the diabetes but nothing for the anemia. I retired in 92 and VA said it was not service connected. It seems my blood has some kind of emsyme that will not allow it to retain B12. I claimed it was the agent orange--but no luck.

Luckly-no psoriasis.

crash you old dog! You are not going to believe this but I was in DaNang 69-70 and I was just dx with anemia about year ago and I give myself B-12 shots once a month and I am also db2. Man this is really weird stuff. There MUST be a connection somewhere and the VA is not telling us!

It would probably best to file psoriasis under Agent Orange Exposure. My rating is 30% in Acne Conglobata, psoriasis, and chlorance, herbicide related. The rating decision stated since I was in Vietnam I was exposes to a herbicidal agents, therefore your claim of the above mentioned is granted at 30%.

This is simply amazing!!! What a coincidence, three old geezers come down with pernisious anemia and DMII. It just has to be a VA plot. Never mind pernisious anemia is typically thought of as an old folks condition or is related to DMII and reflux medications. Never mind the NAS, IOM or any other competent research facility has not found a link. It just has to be a VA plot to avoid paying veterans their just deserves.

Several commonly used categories of drugs can decrease the body's supply of vitamin B12, such as proton pump inhibitors (Prilosec, Prevacid, Nexium and others) or H2 receptor blockers (Tagamet, Pepcid, Zantac), which are used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and peptic ulcer disease. Other categories of drugs that can lead to low vitamin B12 include: diabetes medication (Metformin), antibiotics (Neomycin), anticancer medications (Methotrexate), anticonvulsants (Dilantin or phenytoin, Mysoline or primidone, Phenobarbitol), anti-gout medications (Colbenamid, Colchicine), blood pressure medications (Aldomet or methyldopa), anti-Parkinson's medications (Larodopa or levodopa, Sinemet), antipsychotics (Thorazine or chlorpromazine), antituberculosis medications (INH or isoniazid), birth control pills (Ovulen, Ovral, Ortho-Novum), cholesterol-lowering drugs (Cholestyramine, Atromid), and potassium replacements (K-Lor, K-Dur, KlorCon, Micro-K, Slow-K).

Vitamin B12 deficiency is traditionally thought of as a condition of elderly people who have poor eating habits or inadequate digestion. Also, it may be found in anyone who chooses to avoid meat and animal products..

...anyone that served during the Vietnam era and that includes me as I predate that by a long shot. My wife tells me I'm a party pooper too, always with the facts.

LOOK UP TROPICAL SPRUE AND G6PD, STUDY COMPLETED AT CANTO SPECIAL FORCES CAMP

Go to the WRAIR site. A very large reserach project was conducted on Anti Malaria medications.
As well as many other results from other research projects in RVN. The WRIAR Research Team conducted the study(baseline) on the South Viets prior to the use of Agent Orange. Current information on agent orange is maintained by a project call Ranchhand.

Sound like the treatment you are getting is the same a tropical sprue.
They used to say " DONT LET TROPICAL SPRUE SCREW YOU"

As I was reading the first posts I was getting nervous. I too have have anemia I have had the B-12 shots along with taking B-12 tablets everyday. I was worrying about how soon I would be getting DMII. Now that Steam put stop to my worrying I can sleep tonight. I guess all I have to worry about is the psoriasis because of the anti malaria pills. Now that I think of it my body did not assimilate the stuff that is why I got malaria. The good thing is I do eat meat and meat by products so that goes in the good side but I only have 7 inches of large colon so I guess one cancels the other.

So I guess that only leaves that I am just a pathetic old man whose only excitement is waiting to see what the next illness is going to be. LOL

Antimalarial drugs do not cause psoriasis, but they can cause psoriasis to increase in severity if you already have psoriasis when you start taking the drugs.

As for psoriasis and anemia, there are some known associations between psoriasis, and some drugs used to treat psoriasis, and some types of anemia. Keep in mind that there are different types of anemia. If you are service connected for psoriasis (something you won't get by trying to associate it with antimalarial drugs), you should discuss with your doctor any relationship between the two conditions.

i have DM II and anemia too !!! i get the B12 shots and a bucket of iron pills !!!

I realize this thread is a little old but I just came across it on a Google search and wanted to post. I was a combat engineer working in and around the Qui Non area during most of my Vietnam tour in '66-'67. About 3 or 4 years ago I started getting symptoms of numbness in the toes of both feet. A retired doctor friend who's specialty was neurotoxins and chemical poisons mentioned the relationship to Agent Orange exposure so I wrote the VA about it (I live in Greece now). Ultimately they refused any claim saying the numbness was not on the VA's list of symptoms that would allow benefits for AO exposure. Still concerned about the numbness (my father was diabetic) I consulted a neurosurgeon here and he confirmed (along with a blood test) that I had a B-12 deficiency - also a symptom of AO exposure. I will be starting daily shots this coming week. There seems to be quite a bit of discussion around the net these days about this subject - there's even a site for children of Vietnam Vets (http://agentorangelegacy.com/) that you might want to pass along. I feel fortunate that I don't have some of the more severe medical issues some of you have reported here but I should report that my 28 year-old son was born with ADD, LD and has had over 5 eye surgeries to correct Strabismus (wandering or lazy eye). It never occurred to me until recently that AO could have been a factor. Wishing all of you the very best.
