I get a lot of queries about VBN, how it began, who started it etc. I asked MomII
(original Member/Admin) to help me put something together so I would have something to point to when asked about this. Here ya go.
"Back in 2000, I met a vet (Glenn Smilie) on an Multiple Sclerosis forum who had been diagnosed with MS and had questions regarding his VA claim. I had been providing information to other vets on the board who were filing VA claims and helped Glen with his claim (which was later granted). A short time later, Glen started the old "Veterans With Disabilities" website. I joined him there and continued to provide helpful information where and when I could. It wasn't too long before RETDAVNSO joined us and added his expertise as a VSO.
We were soon joined by POP, Epilistero, MuggsMcGinnis, and many others, who were working on their claims. nmfxstc was there in those early days as well, sharing his knowledge and experiences with PTSD. As happens with a lot of good websites, Veterans with Disabilities was attacked by a troll who absolutely refused to give it up. As a result, Muggs (who will forever remain my hero) stepped up to the plate and started the Veterans Benefit Network. He brought RETDAVNSO and myself on board as Administrators because of our backgrounds with the VA and he brought POP in as an ADMIN because of his background in computer stuff. We began drafting Moderators and Admins for back-up and support....people like nmfxstc, ggold, Rob,
As VBN began to grow, so did the number of questions, but also the number of people with expertise. People like jDave, ggold, mrG777, USNretiredvet, Cruiser, Patrick, etc.. And some of the vets who initially joined with questions relating to their own claims, learned, studied and drank up every bit of knowledge they could so that they could help answer the questions of other vets... folks like POP, jWilson, Vol, Itsa, Epistolero, MD50, etc.. After putting in thousands of hours and experiencing our own health issues and limitations, some of us have had to limit our involvement in the VBN, although it remains very close to our hearts.
The hope has always been that this site would self perpetuate itself as long as there are vets who are willing to "pay it forward". That hope has come to fruition. KUDOS TO ALL OF YOU!"
