All of my uncles, four were in WWII. Two wounded. They all came back.

All of the adult males of age in World War II, except two, in my boyhood neighborhood were veterans, most of them of overseas service.

My father was in the Korean War. A lot of is boyhood friends who were a couple of years older than him, because people stopped having so many children in the great depression, died on the plains of Northern Europe. In fact he told of being in the telegraphers tower listening to the Morse Code and understanding it as the Railroad telegrapher received the Department of War death notifications, one of which was the telegrapher's own son and someone my dad knew. My father said the fellow stayed on duty through the rest of shift., went out and got drunk and was back to work the next day.

I worked alongside of Ted Peters, one of the finest people I ever knew, who never told his supervisor, who was an ex marine of one peacetime enlistment and tried to bully Ted and remarked about how he should quit his job if he (Ted)was too old to work, that he had been a Navy Corpsman who carried a BAR on the long winter march from the Reservoir and had been awarded a Silver Star for that service.

I asked him how it was, Ted never swore, but he said, "Cold, #%%#%#@ Cold."
