Just to add in Texas you only have to be rated 50% to get the DV tag... it cost $3.00 a year for the first one, and regular price for the second one.

Texas does something real stupid.
First you have to get a regular tag when you buy a vehicle,
next you have to get a regular DV tag for $3.00 (without wheelchair emblem) and get a less than full refund on the regular tags, then
if you want the wheelchair symbol on the plate you have to request it, using a doctors prescription saying your disabled, Texas then will issue you the same DV plate number but it will have a wheelchair on the plate. ( and Texas law only allows one plate with the wheelchair emblem.

I lived in Georgia and they willl not even put the wheelchair emblem on the DV plates, while NC only issues the plate with a wheelchair emblem

everystate is different, bu this is one area where I think they should be same.

Just think in Texas you can part in handicapp with a DV plate that does not have a wheelchair emblem, but you can not legally park in any handicapp spaces on federal property or in any other state. Georgia is the same in that regard.

New laws amend Texas Transporation Code

Disabled veteran license plates and parking privileges affected

The 81st Texas Legislature passed bills that amend the Texas

Transportation Code in regards to parking privileges for

certain veterans displaying designated specialty license

plates, registration of vehicles and the cost of plates.

Effective June 19, 2009, HB 965 amends Sections

504.202(b) and (g) and entitles a veteran to register,

for the person's own use, any number of motor vehicles

for which the registrant may be issued specialty license plates

for disabled veterans and disabled parking placards. In addition, HB 618

amends the heading of Sec. 681.008 to read, "Parking Privileges: Certain

Veterans and Military Award Recipients." The law now exempts a vehicle

with a speciality license plate for recipients of the Air Force Cross or

Distinguished Service Cross, the Army Distinguished Service Cross, the

Navy Cross, the Medal of Honor or the Legion of Merit medal from parking

fees collected through a meter charged by a governmental authority other

than the federal government, when the vehicle is being

driven by or for the transportation of the person who

registered the vehicle.

Transportation Code Sections 681.008(a) and (b), are

amended by HB 2020 and authorizes a vehicle to be

parked for an unlimited period in a parking space or area

designated for the disabled if the vehicle displays license plates issued

by another state of the United States indicating that the owner or operator

of the vehicle is a disabled veteran of the United States Armed Forces. This

takes effect on Sept. 1, 2009.

Also effective Sept. 1, 2009, is HB 3593, which amends Transportation

Code Section 504.202. This authorizes a person entitled to license plates for

disabled veterans to elect to receive standard license plates at the same cost

as the disabled veteran license plates.
