Posts: 37 07/21/08 15:13:39	Hello, I'm CONFUSED nothing New! I called GWS 1-800 number this AM spoke with a woman who explained the process as such: After I retire the raters will review my medical records along with my VA C/P exams and then with that finding decide if I meet any of the criteria for compensation related to the GW. This is what I don't understand: I retire Jan09, I have had my C/P exams completed and my paperwork submissions were sent to the VA 18Jul08. WHY would I have to wait/prolong GW ratings until I retire. I understand no final rating can take place until after I turn my DD214 in. But again, would it not be COMMON sense to take of GW appointments Prior to separating from active service. Is the system ass backwards or what step am I missing? Thanks Chuck

Even though VA and Defense are working together on getting some C&P exams done prior to separation from service, the fact remains that you are not a "veteran" yet and VA cannot officially proceed further until you are. And even if they could proceed with your claim, think about how a veteran who was discharged six months ago would feel if his/her claim was being set aside so they could work the claim of someone who is still on active duty. VA cannot officially proceed further until you are. And even if they could proceed with your claim, think about how a veteran who was discharged six months ago would feel if his/her claim was being set aside so they could work the claim of someone who is still on active duty. So why do they allow us the opportunity to start the process at the 180 day mark. As for the person who waited until they retired to start the process I guess either they didn't know or didn't care about their future. Posts: 4 07/26/08 17:44:42	Understand your frustration. I retired on 30 Jun 2008 and I also had filed my claim through the BDD process while on active duty. I completed the claim and all CPs by 23 January yet until I was officially a VET on 1 July the VA did not even start the process. On the bright side they say being a BDD claim it takes 30-90 days after started to completion. We shall see.

Whith the DOD doing them now gets a lot of time out of the way on just waiting to even getting an appointment for the C&P in the VA. So as you get the last bit of paperwork in your VA comp file (DD214) your file will go right to the rater were as some one the just ETS and did not start until then will need to work at getting the paperwork sent to the VARO have them set up the C&P take the C&P, wait for all of the Docs sent everything back to the RO then send it to the raters.
