Hello and welcome jaengelkes.
Nightmares are 1 of 17 symptoms of PTSD. You need to tell your husbands doctor about his nightmares especially if they are cronic. Also have your husband write down his nightmare and whatever symptoms he has and file for an increase. You might want to check out www.ncptsd.va.org and read what the National Center for PTSD has to say. It is a very good source for information about PTSD. Good luck and thank you and thank your husband for ya'll's service. Tex. |

Welcome, J!
As has already been said, unfortunately there's no extra money for nightmares. But, if the nightmares are new or increasing since his original PTSD C&P exam, you should definitely file for an increase. I know in our PTSD "world" nightmares and flashbacks are one of the things that hitnmy hubby the hardest. When he's had a really bad night, it fuels all of the other symptoms. www.FamilyOfAVet.com: Resources & Support for OIF/OEF Vet Families

I think txhillbilly meant this link:
http://www.ncptsd.va.gov/ncmain/index.jsp Plus, there have been 44 identified symptoms of PTSD, not just 17. Even in DSM-IV there are 20 listed. Patrick

I have a quick question? I have a lot of nightmares(2 or 3 a week) for 3 years, but sometime they don't don't make no sense. They always have to do
with fighting or running from something and I get shoot or someone gets killed or I'm trying to kill someone but they won't die. whats up with that
and they feel like I dream them all night. I try to go back to sleep, but I start the nightmare where I left off. I take a Meds to go to sleep. I had to
start takeing sleeping meds and meds for depression in the sandbox. BB

GoldenBB,
I understand what you are saying i suffer with certain dreams that keep coming back and have them sometimes 2-3 times a week, these dreams are almost the same all the time and sometimes ill have a dream that isnt anything like them. one dream I have hit me as I was reading your example of trying to kill them and they wont die. One of my regular dreams is just like that as im trying to fight of 4-5 enemies. they seem imortal to me and overpower me, and then I wake up in a anxiety type of attack. I hate going to sleep because of these stupid dreams. Usually once I have these dreams that night then they are done and dont come back the rest of eve, or at least dont remember. Hang in there you are not alone and probably everyone here understands your feelings. Russ |

Chase or running dreams are a sign of anxiety with the individual feeling threatened or have a feeling of being in physical
danger. Turning that anger and anxiety outward in your dream is saying to you that have a need to escape the stress your experiencing. If your running it
signifies your trying to avoid something or trying to hide it. Killing represents killing off of old parts of yourself and old habits.

Thanks guyruss and Patrick for your post."Killing represents killing off of old parts of yourself and old habits". Does that mean that at
some point and time they will go away. I did not like to talk a lot about my time in the sandbox, but after reading here someone said "share share"
and I have been telling more "sharing" and that helps I must say, but it only helps for a little while and then it comes back(Like on the Movie The
Shinning" Heres Johnny". I'm going to start with a group counseling at the end of the month. I hope that helps more. BB

Goledn,
All nightmares and dreams eventually go away, but often are replaced with other dreams, etc. Dreams and nightmares are a constant pattern of subconscious happenings triggered by experiences that you have been on or the fear of being in. Dreams are a way for the body to fight stress when you asleep. Much like when you become over stressed when you are conscious, you can faint or pass out. It is the bodies way of saying,"time to turn this off." So when you wake up from a dream, it is your body saying, "Okay we (the body) have had enough." Patrick

Medications can also cause dreams and nightmares. Case in point, the medicine Klonopin. A pill giving by VA to PTSD patients that often causes dreams

I used to have dreams where I was about to be killed and I would try to shoot the person trying to kill me but the gun wouldn't shoot. Pull the trigger
nothing happens kinda dreams, just terrifying because you know you're gonna die and you are powerless to stop it.
But now, after almost 15 years of these dreams it plays out more like a bad Rambo flick. Just walking through shitheads mowing them down, surgical, tactical, predatory. I don't feel any thrill to any of it, more detatched and analytical, as if doing an AAR looking how to be even more lethal. I don't really consider them nightmares anymore. Its just what happens when I sleep, whenever I can sleep. |

I have dreams where I cannot turn fast enough to react to fire and to return fire. The dream always ends before the turn is fininshed. It takes forever to
check magazine and pull charging handle in slow motion as pieces disintegrate about me...

I need to share, one of the things that still brings me to tears is one time we where out on a run to a refuge camp and one of the little boys that was always
there he could speck good English and he would just like to talk to me, he did not like to beg for thing like the other kids. I would always look for him, he
was about 12 years old(I have kids that were 12 years old). We pulled into the camp and I saw him laying on the ground and he was real sick and he was
shivering with a fever. I had no Tylenol with me, but I had bottles of it back at the camp, but could not go back to get it. We were there for about 4 hour and
he die on the ground right in front of me. I had never felt so helpless!!, I cried for days, I always thought I would have nightmare about all of the children
that I watch die from dysentery, but my nightmares are always about the SOB's that was reasonable for the suffering (I guess that is a blessing from God) I
would like to kill one of those MF'ers rag-heads right now. . Thanks for reading and pray for the children in the War Zones. After telling this maybe I
will sleep good tonight. BB

My husband takes two different medications that are suppose to prevent his nightmares and dreams and help him to sleep (in addition to Ambien). However, he
still "fights" in his sleep, tosses and turns or wakes up swinging or yelling nearly every night. In my opinion (for what it's worth) I honestly
don't think there is anything that can take away what has been seen, done or heard by the service members that will ever "cure" their PTSD.

I also take meds for nightmare and they help some, I think what Patrick said about stress plays the bigest role in it all. BB
