Posts: 7 03/31/08 14:09:50	Met with my new VSO for a 3rd claim. Unlike the others, this guy impresses me. After we talk about my case for a while, he asks, have you been treated for Fibromyalgia? As many times I've been to doctors the last few years, not one has mentioned it. He wants me to ask my primary doc about it during my upcoming visit. I've looked on the net at the different symptoms, but would like to here from ones on our site of the fence. I've been retired 11 years now, and I can tell you that most civilian docs just can't relate to where we've been. Thanks Brian 10% Back 10% Depression/Sleep disorder

Posts: 130 06/30/08 23:38:55	If you have any of the ailments listed under GWS then it i presumptive. What they like to do is Dx with FM first. I guess this makes them feel good. There are specific test for FM but they are very subjective. I found that once they Dx'd for FM, they pretty much quit. I had to go to a private doctor to see if my fatigue and nausea was due to FM or CFS. I think it is CFS due to symptoms that are pretty much spcific to CFS but getting the doctors to agree is the key. I think mine is almost convinced.

They thing is for a DX of CFS is the debilitating fatigue needs to be for most of your complaint. It also depends on the Dr. and on you. I have a lot of problems with the fatigue and that is one of many problems I had before the Army even did the MEB. If one has that problem keep bringing it up every time you go and see the Dr.. Posts: 140 08/07/08 12:54:47	Agreed. Keep bringing the problems up ever time you go in. My current doctor just decided he couldn't help me and referred me to a neurologist. I think that is good. I think the opinions of the Neurologist would hold more weight than an internal medicine doctor anyway. At least I hope. My headaches (migrains and tension) are getting worse and I never feel rested anymore. Hopefully this new doc will be able to help. I am going to lay out what I am looking for during our first meeting and see if he is willing to help if he feels I do indeed have CFS. We will see.

Posts: 177 08/26/08 15:43:02	I was sent to a civilian neurologist for chronic pain (tricare) right after I got out. He diagnosed Fibromyalgia . I brought the paperwork to my VA PCP. He sent me to a VA neurologist who then found the same thing. I put in my claim and at my CP the doctor was the father of the civilian neurologist who first diagnosed Fibromyalgia ( I was lucky he agreed with both the VA and his son). Anyway they found me service connected for Fibromyalgia but said it was secondary to the Interferon the VA had prescribed. I now think many of my problems (Raynodes disease, Fibromyalgia, chronic pain, IBC, exc) are GWS. I am already rated at 100% PT so I will not go back to have the diagnoses corrected. But I agree they will call it ANYTHING else rather then admit GWS.

With the Law stating FM and CFS as presumptive due to GWI, it is hard to lose it down the road. After hearing the researchers riving their reports, I do not think it will go away. Some of the research is showing many of them are close to if not the same. I still feel that if one is being told they have FM and they are tired a lot and need to rest a lot, they need to get a new Doc, or a 2^nd look at everything. The main difference with FM and CFS is hat the underlining factor is of CFS is you are tired most of the time and need to take brakes a lot. CFS also can go to 100% as one gets sicker where FM only goes to 40%.

What if the VA gives you a new drug that does not cause side effects such as FMS. They claimed it was secondary to the drug not PG related right? Then you are not persumtive awarded. Again if the doctor did not say it don't let the VBA rater say it without medical evidence. See my point now? Research shows most people with FMS develope CFS at some point in ther life. What if the VA denies you compensation for CFS, you've lost a chance at 100% rating. Make them get it right the first time...just my opinion. Good Luck

I will have to see what the actual paperwork says. I guess I should talk to my VSO and have a claim started. I hate driving there though as I am done for day after the drive. I agree with CIWS1127. Do not let the leave the diagnosis of FM as secondary to a medication. FM IS NOT secondary to a medication. It can be secondary to a serious accident or disease but not to just a medication.

I would fight the rating as being secondary to your meds. Make sure you have the VSO file it 'CFS/FM due to Gulf War Illness' it can make a difference at the RO. I just had a vet came to me yesterday that was denied for many of his gulf war illness issues and it all came down to the other service officer not adding the due to GWI. The VSO also did not add the C&E for his PTSD so that was not reopened even thought the vet had 3 docs saying he had it.

If you got the 100%, chances are, your conditions are not/have not improved and according to your doctor, they're never expected to improve over your life time. Chances are 99.999999% sure, your conditions and your health will continue to deteriate over your life time. Fact of life- So, if you've got a legit claim, especially with multi issues, I'd file. Now you can wait a while and file, gathering more evidence. Continue to visit your doctor regularly and get your meds. Just my humble opinion. Whoop

I will try to get it connected to GWI in my medical records next time I see my PCP and neurologist (I have been researching it). I won't ask for a new / change of rating as the system is already clogged up, but just having it in my records should help if I ever need it in the future.

Whoop If you have something that is from the servcie and you do not have it rated and you die from it, even at 100% but under a serton time frame, your wife will not get DIC. So sometimes one might want to. one at 100% P&T shoulf only do it if under the time and that it is something that could kill them soon. I would urge getting CFS documented now (get while the gettin's good) so if you need SS you can get SSDI. CFS is debelatating and well get worse over time.

PGW, I so have to disagree with you that this two illness are a lot a like. I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia shortly after being readied for deployment to GW1...I was in my mid to late 20's at the time...I'm now 48, so I've lived with FMS for a very long time. I was able to function and have a full life... Chronic Fatigue Immune Dysfunction Syndrome (CFIDS) is a whole other beast...I became incredibly ill in 2003, my last year of active service, and that fall I was diagnosed with CFIDS. I thought, like many people think, it will mean your just more tired...the name understates, big time, what this illness is capable of doing. With CFIDS you can very well become bedridden...this illness is that debilitating. It affects every system of your body...beginning with your immune system. For those of you being newly diagnosed with CFIDS I can not stress enough to you to take this illness serious, to become as educated as you can about it, to modify your lifestyle immediately...I'm into my 6th year of being ill, and my health has spiraled downward since 03...when I first heard you can become bedridden I thought "oh hell no"..."never happen to me"...well I'm not to far away from that status.
