Are you collecting SSDI or FERS disability?

Yep, 3 government checks each month. Can't beat that.

They are also required to report any award of SS benefits to OPM. FERS Disability Retirement will be offset by either 60% or 100% of any SS (included SSDI) benefit if you are under age 62. After age 62 SSDI is converted to SS.
I am not aware of that requirement. If he has a doctor's statement that he is no longer able to work, why would he need to apply for SSDI at that point ? Makes no sense and I don't believe that is the correct process or procedure.

Yes, three checks but that really was not a consideration. I remember my wife, at first, asking what was we going to live on. I replied that I did not know but I was real sick I could not go on. I will not go into medical history but I always say a person will know when they become to sick to work. BTW, I was a GS13/10 and on my way to GS14. The money from work was and is more than I now get. I did not have to send in a Drs. letter. They looked at my VA records. Getting a letter makes sense but I did not.
Yes, I have the offsets. That offset maybe why you are forced to apply for SSDI. You come out better, money wise with SSDI and the offset than straight FERS.
Vet10, It will be OK. Just follow what Personel tells you to do. "Yep, 3 government checks each month. Can't beat that". Not bragging but I get a fourth check from civilian retirement where I worked. At one time, I got a 401 retirement check too but it is all gone after drawing it for 10years. My main point is that if you are sick and I mean really sick you can not work. You will know it and the money will be second to the illness. I am, medically, much better now but since I have not worked in 12 years, lost my licenses, my age now, returning to work force is not possible. I have been very lucky and hope everyone who becomes disabled will be the same.

DEROS1969, Thanks for you support! I had talked with my boss awhile back that I might file for disability retirement. Today I asked him to appoint an acting Director in my place since my health prevented me from working. Hardest thing I have ever done. Your right, you know when you are too sick to keep working. Been sitting on the fence for the last 6 months; I guess hoping I would get better. Such is not the case. Thanks again, Vet10

Information About Disability Retirement (FERS) Try Reading page 2:
If you are under age 62, Federal retirement law requires your disability benefits under FERS to be reduced by 100 percent of your social security benefit for any month in which you are entitled to social security disability benefits during the first 12 months of eligibility. After the first year, your disability annuity is equal to 40 percent of your high-3 average salary minus 60 percent of your social security benefit for any month in which you are entitled to social security disability benefits. Therefore, it is also your responsibility to document that you have applied for social security disability benefits AFTER YOU SEPARATE FROM YOUR AGENCY. Your application cannot be completely processed without this information. If you are awarded social security disability benefits at any time after you have applied for or begin receiving disability benefits, you must still notify OPM of the effective date and the amount of the social security benefits.
Important: FERS disability benefits usually begin before the claim for social security benefits is fully processed. Because the FERS disability benefit must be reduced by 100 percent of any social security benefit payable for 12 months, social security checks should not be negotiated until the FERS benefit has been reduced. The social security checks will be needed to pay OPM for the reduction which should have been made in the FERS annuity

My situation is similar to this. I am an FERS excepted (must be in NG to have job) Fed Civil Service that was activated and sent to Iraq. During the deployment my ankle was messed up and I am on my way out with a title 61 medical disability retirement (on active duty over 30 days). My disability is rated at 30% according to the VA, so I will receive disability retirement pension form the military. Because of the requirement to be in the NG normally if a person is put out of the NG for medical reasons the Fed Civil Service automatically gives them a medical retirement. So will I receive the OPM retirement along with my military retirement and the VA disability?
Thanks

you may find yourself dead some day, never retired

My friends started retiring 10 years ago, all told me what a good deal it was, They, with out exception, are all back in the work force or pushing up daisies.
I know it seems obvious, but why did your friends go back to work? Did they need the money, or what? Thanks.
