Posts: 25190 Mar 11 08 12:08 PM	Essentially, an effective stressor letter contans evidence that places you at a place, time, and situation that provides a nexus for your claimed cndition. "Buddy letters" are helpful, but not if they are not verificable (i.e., the buddy who says you were involved in a firefight in "X" province on "X" day, but he was not in your unit; Orders assigning you to "Y" Company, but no record of you being in vlved in "Z" patrol, etc.) Lots of fooks were aboard the Oriskiny or Constitution when fires broke out, but not all were invoved directly. Almost any Marine can lay claim to being in "X" Battalion or Regiment, a unit that was awarded a PUC for a specific operation, but not all companies or platoons participated in that action. Get the idea? Unit diaries, performace reports, etc. should provide most of your stresor evidence. What is it that you are claiming as a stressor??? Fillean meal ar an meallaire.

Posts: 33 Mar 11 08 12:28 PM	What I initially sent the VA was a copy of the official MACV report of my FSB being overrun witch included the KIA & WIA counts, a copy proving my battery was awarded the Valorous Unit Award for that date and proof that I was assigned to that unit at the time. I hope that was a good start and I know I can submit the stressor letter later, I was just wondering how graphic does one have to get. Thanks

Posts: 17423 Mar 11 08 1:03 PM	One thing to keep in mind is that the VA Rating Specialist (or DRO) does not determine what is or is not a stressor. Only the examining psychiatrist can do this and they normally do this on the basis of what you tell them. The purpose of the statement that you submit to the Regional Office is to give them the sufficient when and where so they can try to verify whatever it is that you are saying. The assumption is that the information in your written statement will match what you told the psychiatrist. For example, let's say that the doc diagnoses PTSD and says that it is due to a sexual assault in service. You send a statement to the Regional Office describing an accident in which you were involved. Your statement about the accident is worthless to VA because that isn't the event that the doc said caused PTSD. It won't matter whether the accident is verified or not with regard to the claim for PTSD. What must be verified is the event described by the doc. I used to see this quite often in claims of combat related PTSD in persons who had no presumptive verification of combat such as a CIB. The stressor letter they wrote would be totally different from what they told the doc. Often these claims would be denied because the veteran simply failed to give VA sufficient information to verify the event described by the doc. Cruiser

Posts: 33 Mar 11 08 1:30 PM	Good points Cruiser, in my initial (very strange) interview with the VA psychiatrist all he asked me was if I was in combat and he/I did not get into any details. He gave me a diagnoses of major depression and chronic PTSD. The following two visits lasted about two minutes each and he hurried me out the door saying he was behind and had to go. I hear all sorts of scenarios from other vets and get variety of opinions, just starting to see how difficult this can be. Thanks

Thanks When, where, and what FSB were you at when you were over-run by the enemy? I was at FFSB Bert (Battle of Sui Cut), Vietnam, Jan-1968, same as Oliver Stone who wrote and directed "Platoon" about that particular battle.

Posts: 33 Mar 13 08 1:39 PM	TDIU FSB aka LZ Nancy in April 1970, it was SW of Quang Tri. I believe the 1st Cav was there in 1968.

Closet Vols Fan	I would also suggest seeing if you can find "Afteraction Reports" that verify the dates and times and participants in a specific operation or actions against the enemy.
