I'm about to go 100% due to increased frequency of gout, rheumatoid arthritis and spinal issues. I contacted my Voc Rehab counsellor because my family
doctor (we went to school together) says that I most likely won't be able to pursue standard work due to the numbers of gout and RA flare ups, I'm
missing about 3 or more months of work annually and after I have my back cut on I'm going to be out of sick days/fmla leave and most likely cut loose from
my employer. I'm currently pursuing my RN degree with chapt 31 benefits (I think that's the chapter) and after talking to some of my professors, they
can't see how any place would hire me considering my work history.
My counsellor says that the Self employment is most likely not going to be a viable option for my condition and that I should pursue the ILP options. I was wondering if I presented a business plan would that help my case? I'm currently a hobby knifemaker and while that's not a normal self employment model, I'd rather attempt that than go IU and use ILP and SSI. The only other business I know well is managing bars lol but I can't see the VA dropping $100k on me to open one. When I questioned him about the ILP he talked about the home modifications but that's not required for my medical issues. I thought you could use ILP for hobbies with the VA providing some monetary support to start up with training, equipment and supplies.
I did sift through several dozen pages of threads using the search, just didn't find one that completely answered my questions.
Thanks guys,
Will
