Posts: 7749 Nov 16 07 5:00 PM	Dan: The problem you're having is these files are in Portable Document Format. In order to modify and save the document, you need to have a copy of Adobe Acrobat on your PC. Most of us only have the freeware Adobe Reader which lacks that support. I do what you ask all the time at work but I have the latest version of Acrobat installed. I've seen some files in Word format that you could "Save as" but I haven't seen a 4138 that I know of. Acrobat costs in the $400+ range but there are free/inexpensive/shareware versions out there. Perhaps one of them will work as well. I don't know, never tried it. Probably worth a shot. Google on "Save as" + PDF and see what comes up. FWIW, MS Office 2007 has a free "Save as" plugin available maybe it will save filled PDF's. Posts: 278 Nov 17 07 1:15 PM	What you could do is do a screen capture(with scrolling if needed) using a graphics program. Save it for your records. Its not the same as saving it but at least its a record you can have. You could also print it out and probaby edit it too. .......sk00ter

Posts: 7749 Nov 17 07 5:57 PM	Now that White mentions it, you could take him up on his offer, purchase Acrobat or even purchase one of the inexpensive clones that include a driver to save PDF's but if you're really bucks down, there's always the option to install a trial version of one of the PDF converters. Most have some sort of limitation built-in and converters don't always produce a faithful conversion. Here are 3 of the converters with demo's I've come across. The last looked extremely promising. It produces an unlimited number of conversions but is limited to 5 pages. ISTM, 5 pages would be sufficient for most VA forms. The second one replaces random characters with an asterisk The Demo copies are free. It can be used for a lot of things, including those you mentioned or you can just write the information on a napkin and send it to the VA. Posts: 322 Nov 26 07 6:45 AM	When you complete the form print it but before you close the document, copy it by using the copy function at the top of the page. Then paste it in a word document on your hard drive. You can always go back and reprint (the completed form) if necessary. If you do not know how to copy and save it is quite simple. First open up a blank word document then go back to the VA Form. Immediately above the form is a symbol that looks like a camera (on the right side of select) Left click on the camera. (this is the snap shot tool) Then Right clink anywhere in the form. In the drop down box left click "select all" Then right click again and the drop down box will reappear. Left click "copy selected graphic" (you just took a picture of the document) Then paste the copied document in the word file that you created. Save the word file. All your information will be saved and you can print it whenever you want. If necessary, practice a little before you complete the form so you will not have to redo. If you have two pages, you will need to copy each page individually.

My wife decided to go back to school. The V.A. says no because I've never been rated on a permanent basis. So now the battle begins. Could use your help sir. My addy is REMOVED Thanks brother. The primary reason VA likes for folks to use it is to insure that they get their name, claim number, and address on the form. If you want to save something just use the word processing program in your computer and forget about the 21-4138. Cruiser

It has a lot of forms that you fill out and submit to VA, plus you can print a copy of what you submitted at any time. You can even scan evidence and attach it to your document for submission. What I like is you don't have to fill in all your info each time you submit another 21-4138. You can choose to have it stay filled out. https://vabenefits.vba.va.gov/vonapp_ssl/login.asp I usually cover all my bases by printing and sending everything via Certified snail mail after I submit online. Posts: 503 Sep 6 10 8:24 AM	Just to add to the fray. I keep a hard copy of everything I send to the VA (including Certified Return Receipts). Once I print it out, I scan it to a PDF format. (The printer, scanner copier I use cost $59. including the software). I then back everything up to the online service Carbonite and to a memory stick. If you ever have a crash or some natural disaster destroying your home records , its nice to know there will always be a way to retrieve your information. I learned the hard way several years ago.
