Just wondering if anyone completed this program. I'm taking my Part II physical here in a few weeks. I'm doing it out of Ft. Knox and go on terminal
leave in November. I'm taking 90 days, not including 20 permissive. As anyone have any problems with this program? Also when I was doing my VA claim
sheet, I was directed to a DAV rep. Any comments on that?
Thanks, Paul |

wolakp,
Welcome to the VBN. Next, about your question about the program, I don't know about it first hand, but from othe vets who've been getting out over the last year or so. Most say it's a good thing and helps make the transition into the civilian world better! Make sure you get your 20days permissive in writing before you leave! You are entitled to them and sometimes, what we don't know can hurt us! As to the DAV; a good org that helps the vets, there are several others that are just as good. Only word of caution is: YOU are YOUR OWN best VSO/Veterans service officer! Meaning, you become active and knowledgeable about your claims and how to win your case. You've found the VBN, so you've got the hard part out of the way. Meaning, you've also found a good resource of information and experience about the VA, the laws and regulations and how to correctly do a claim. Ask questions and holler if we can be of any help. Thanks for your service and sacrafices! Whoop |

Wolakp,
I used the BDD program when I retired. I filed through Ft. Campbell and was also directed to a DAV rep to file the claim. I had my decision within 45 days. After I got my decision letter I changed my reprensation from DAV to American Legion because there is no DAV rep where I retired to. It sounds like you are in good hands. Come on back if you have more questions. Thank you for your service and welcome to VBN.

You have been given a lot of great info on how to proceed.
The only thing I would add is to make sure that you have 2 copies of your medical records. You are authorized to have at least 2 copies before you exit the military. Also, make sure that your Physical is really, really, really thorough. Let the doc know what you plan to file for with the VA and ask for the doc to speak to that in your Physical paperwork. I went thru the BDD when it was still in the Pilot Program phase and would advise everyone to do it if they can. Thank you for your service to our country.

Thank you everyone-Yes I made a copy of my records. Yes, I have my permissive TDY already signed and it's in conjuntion with my terminal leave. Total of
110 days is nice!
NavyNCC, was that 45 days from when you retired, right? I'm not retired until 1 March. So I can bet 45-90 days from 1 March? They have me scheduled for 3-4 hours for my Part II. I have my hearing in the morning. I'm in EOD and I failed my hearing in my Part I. I didn't claim hearing when I did the VA sheet for claimable disabilities. The DAV rep says with a quick look at my records that he can list 13 claimable disabilities. I'll tell the Doc everything that hurts. Thanks for you help. |

NavyNCC, was that 45 days from when you retired, right?Correct. I retired Jan31, 2006 and got my decision on March 15th. My understanding is that they could not process my claim until I was off active duty. The program may have changed slightly but I would still think you should have it in 6 weeks or so.

BDD Program, A new letter was recently released authorizing veterans to start thier claims process 180 days out from Release from Active Duty (RAD). I worked a
couple of these last week. My suggestion is do the VA Exam, it should be at least a Gen Med, let them DTA (Duty to Assist) send a copy of your SMR's with
the VA Form 21-526 listing all over your contentions or disabilities, a certified copy of your DD 214 for service verification , A copy of the C&P Gen
Medical Exam and sign the VCAA Notice response if you have no other evidence to support your claim. If you do all of the following and I had your file I would
send it RTR Ready to Rate. Your date of claim will be the day follwing discharge

In regard to the DD Form 214,we must verify service as part of the VA Claims System. Understanding you may not get a DD 214 until you close in on March, 2008, it really wont effect the processing of your claim. My recommendation as soon as you get a copy have it certified as original and send it to the VA immediately. You don't want your claim held up for service verification an additional 60 days maybe. In regards to the VA Form 21-526 get with a Service officer and find out when you can get it completed, again the new policy is 180 days out. Finish your Gen Med and any special examination you may need such as mental or hearing/tinnitus ect. The four critical elements for success are Service verification, properly filled out VA Form 21-526, service medical records to support your claim and turn in your VCAA Notice response, if you have any PME, private medical evidence turn it in yourself, if you do a release of information on a VA 21-4142, then this again adds an additional 60 days to procees your claim, an additional 30 if the provider does not respond the first time around, so now we are 90 days into the process I dont know why so many Vets want the VA to get evidence for them from a Private provider using a VA Form 2142. We will do by law, but it takes us longer. The only thing it does is add time on your claim processing. Follow up, follow up, follow up. I can't promise anything but I can tell you this for sure. The easier you make it on the VA and VSR the faster it gets to the rater, see it everyday. Be proactive, get a good service officer to help you. I'll check back later. |

Did the BDD because I read about it on this site, met the timelines and used a good VSO. I saw a lot of folks in the TAP brief who didn't know about
the time constraints for BDD and they'd already busted the timeline. Not happy people!
My dates: Completed application with VSO help in July 06, terminal leave started Oct 06, retired date: 1 Jan 07, rating letter was dated 29 May 07, received the big brown envelope about a week after that - I think some of this must depend on how lengthy your claim is, and how many pounds of records some lucky rater has to slog thru to answer every condition you claim. I was/am totally impressed with the level of detail in that rating letter. (VA awarded three separate SCs that I didn't even claim!) 30 pages of very specific reasoning for each decision, and just a tad more than a page for every year of service. BDD is a great program. Hey Wolakp,
I think I know you. I too am EOD. I was going to say was an EOD tech, but once a tech always a tech. Hope you get all your ducks in a basket or whatever the saying is. Heard about CSM Lankford. Hard to hear we lost a good EOD tech. Initial Success Or Total Failure

ArmyEODVeteran,
Yes I heard over the weekend. Are you still in? And who are you? LOL. I'm retiring, well terminal leave starting in Nov. This site is really helpful. I think I have things in order. Just trying to find time and to say enough is enough with Battalion right now. If you're out, what are you doing? Paul |

101st1sgt,
I did my Part II physical last week. I had about 15 x-rays taken that lasted about 1 1/2hrs and a complete physical based on my medical records the VA(BDD San Anton) sent them. What happens next? The Doctor said he's going to let the VA know my blood sugar was at 139 and thinks maybe diabietes. Probably another blood test I'm figuring. He measured scars, which I didn't know was claimable. The one on my elbow is 12x2 CM, what ever that means and one on my hip(skin graph) that's 12x2. Do I wait for a letter? A VA rating? Thanks for you help Paul |
