Posts: 518 Jun 23 12 2:05 PM	Tags : None I tryed calling for help to the person at the VA Clinic to see if I could get an appointment to start some type of alcohol treatment, I am self medicating to much and need help bad it has been over a week I have left two messages on the counselors voicemail and no return phone call!! That is reallly sad,

That is reallly sad, Brother, there is no need to call folks! Simply go to the VAMC ER and tell the doc you are ready for admission and treatment....it'll happen for you most ricky tick! Posts: 518 Jun 23 12 2:32 PM	The nearest VAMC ER is a two hour drive from here!! Dont know if I can drive that because I get panic attacks on the highway when driving for some reason. Ya I need to get into treatment soon all those people that work at the VA Clinic and no one can help....I have to do something soon, I got pulled over by a State Trooper last week he had to been able to tell I had been drinking but never asked me just said I see you have disabled veteren plates and just to let you know I am a disabled veteren too. Then after that he let me go on a warning. I was close to home!! He could have easily nail my ass to the wall with a dui!! I need to ge help soon. I called the crisis vet line a week ago and was totally trashed and all upset....UGH I need to do something soon, else my body will evenutallly get permanenty damage.

Posts: 1973 Jun 23 12 6:35 PM	how close to the nearest bus stop? take a bus to the VAMC and admit yourself and start thinking about moving closer to the VA if you are going to need a lot of future treatment being 2 and 1/2 hours away and all the VA is not a concierge service and if you keep driving to go get more booze and that cop stops you again and he writes that DUI well we all know what happens then jail no insurance I don't know I think finding a way to the VA ER would be a lot better way to detox than to do it in county jail I just spent a week in the hospital ICU I live 5 minutes from the VA because I know I require a LOT of medical care good luck make the right decision for you

Posts: 518 Jun 24 12 12:15 AM	I was trying to get in and see if I can do the outpatient treatment right here in my area I live. I own my own home and do not want to relocate and have elderly parents that live right here near me that I have to look after. I have been to several AA meeting in the past and I didnt see anyone volunteering to help me at all. But I am sure there are people out there that will help. Bottom line I have to change. They also have meetings at the VA Clinic!! I just need to get a hold of the right person, I am just frustrated because I want to start treatment as soon as possible in this area.

Posts: 2654 Jun 25 12 10:22 PM	Cheffy check at the clinic there are shuttles usually that run to the main VA hospital a couple days a week. I applaude you seeking treatment but want to encourage an inpatient program. They are much more effective initally that outpatient treatment. After the inpatient the outpatient program is used as a support device. The failure rate for inpatient is not good but outpatient alone is 98% failure rate.

Posts: 1441 Jun 26 12 11:22 AM	In my area the VA has a motorhome looking shuttle. I'm not sure if it is run by the VA but it is painted all over with VA slogans and such. I bet if you contact your VAMC patient advocate office and explain your problem with driving that far, they might be able to do something for you. I have also seen DAV vans at the VA a lot. Maybe they or your county Veterans Office might be able to point you in the right direction to get a ride to your appointments also. Trust me I understand your trepidation in driving. Ever since the troops have been coming home, our area is getting gridlocked like a big city. I hate driving in busy traffic and when I start to loose it, I pull over and sit for a while until I calm down enough to drive further. Congratulations on taking the first step. Posts: 518 Jun 26 12 11:25 AM	I agree with everyone that I think an inpatient would be more effective, I do have people around me in my life that are somewhat dependent on me. I will attempt the outpatient treatment if it does not work i will go into the inpatient. What I really need is the combo of PTSD and the alcohol treatment at the same time they do have those programs but a lot of them are on the East Coast. i have 72 hours sober as of right now and I have been going for walks and will meet with the alcohol treatment person tomorrow, maybe he will encourage inpatient I do not know...Thank you everyone for your support it means a lot to me, I really want this and I have done this before on my own I was sober 8 years last time. So I know I can do this. I just have to make up my mind it is what I want and get some help. Yes Lenny I got your message I will respond soon thank you so much.

Just know it is not how much you drink but what happens to you when you drink. remember how you felt the last time you were sober and give yourself a chance to feel that way again. You are right you have to make up your mind and you know there are a lot of people who will help if you let them. I have gone 3 days without a drink tonight and I made sure I got out and got some exercise today too, but I have been craving a beer all night. Its horrible. : - ( I meet with the alcohol counselor tomorrow thank goodness.

But - 3 years ago - while on a "binge" so to speak - my wife called the law and I was arrested, cuffed, etc. I was playing with my .357 Magnum - - - but not harming anyone - but - scared her anyway. Stupid. My arrest ended up being called "procedure" and I wasn't in the clink overnight - thank goodness. But - both current and ex wives have all had my weapons removed from the household. I guess we are all different. And in many ways we are all the same. Obviously - those of us with PTSD have "issues" - I've concluded that after 3 marriages, etc. etc. Fortunately I've weened myself off of the alcohol - and only occasionally imbibe. But - it sure has made a difference in my relationship(s). Do what you need to do - on your own in a program or at the VA - you'll be amazed at the difference. Regardless - most of the "world" think we Nam vets or others are crazier than out-house rats - - - oh well.
