Posts: 190 Dec 28 11 2:11 PM	I was approved for ssd as of jan 10...when will i be able to apply for medicare and it kick in...Is there anything else i should know? I need to learn about this before i do it...I am just very very confused on all the parts and supplemental insurance and all that stuff...if anyone can help me with info that would be greatly appreciated...Also i am interested in getting my family into the champva program, would my wife be able to have eye dr, and womans drs (do all drs accept it?) i also have 2 young kids, i am just confused by everything...Is there someone i could talk to at the Legion? i am from del. cunty,pa right outside of philly Edited 1 time by rockymtnthunder Dec 31 11 12:29 PM.

Posts: 2789 Dec 28 11 4:07 PM	rocky, That is two subjects. ssd and ChampVA. ssd for now. Two years after you were awarded ssd, they will contact you about Medicare. They should have contacted you in Jan 2011. Have they not and are you sure you have your dates correct? Anyway, take Medicare A and Medicare B. Now that does not pay for it all because there is a deductible. You enroll in the supplement to cover what Medicare does not. Now Champva. Are you 100%SC,P&T? That is the first question. No need to talk about ChampVA unless you are 100%SC P&T. I am sure the VSO at the American legion can help if you need them to but it is pretty straight forward.

I not talking down but trying to help because there is no reason to consider Champva until you are 100%SC, P&T. I know there are confusing terms. It is like a mine field. You need the learn them. We are here to help!

If you qualify for ChampVA, and you should know from your VA Award letter, it does not cover any eye care. However, it does cover ''womans drs" and your wife should first get a PCP and go from there. NO, all doctors do not accept ChampVa but most do; if a doctor accepts Medicare, then they must accept ChampVa. ChampVa reimburses doctors at the Medicare Allowable Rates. Posts: 190 Dec 31 11 12:21 PM	First off, i apoligize for not being well versed on a computer...I am 100 percent sc p/t...My wife has very good health insurance through her employer...I pay for my own...I use the outside drs...I can not find am american dr at the VA so i have used the outside...I pay for everything myself...I was awarded ssd in june of 11 (retro to Jan. 09)...If i could get my wife into the champva system she could probably get a raise at work...She works for a very small company, she has sacrificed raises for insurance...Fair enough...I appreciate any info. i can get...i was jsut trying to get educated on the matter...She is not very into changing health insurance because her and the kids have top notch...I was hoping that someone could inform me if it works for them or not...I dont want her to change if her and the kids cant get the great care they get now Edited 1 time by rockymtnthunder Dec 31 11 12:29 PM.

Then look at Supplements. Of course, you need to get your wife and kids on ChampVA. Repeating the best way for you is Medicare A&B plus a supplement and the rest of your family on ChampVA. There is a lot of foreign doctors in the VA system. I am a retired PA from the VA and used the VA. There is a lot of foreign doctors in civilian practice now a day too.

Posts: 742 Jan 2 12 11:21 PM	why don't you go to a VSO and talk about what you and your family are eligible for???? there's a lot more than just champVA. paid life insurance....another $10K. wife and kids college and etc. as for champVA, there is a number to call and your wife can choose any doc she wants, even better than us veterans in the va system. as for not going to the VA, that is a choice since you have the money to spend.....at 100 %p/t you have great access to eye and dental at the VA toooooo. and a primary doc. can prescribe many of your basic drugs. and remember there are state benefits toooo.http://www.military.com/b...te-veterans-benefits.htm don't be confused just talk to a VSO or the VA....
