hello everyone, i am seeking help in solving a problem with clothing allowance.how do you go about filing for it?. how long after receiving the device(got my brace in feb 2011) do you qualify for the allowance. anyone you can help it will be appreciated.

Providing the brace is for a service connected condition, you should file a form 10-8678 and turn it in to your prostetics dept. I would do it asap so it will get approved. The clothing allowance is paid in Aug or Sept. This will be my first year as well and I was approved two weeks ago, after receiving my brace in Mar/2011.

You have until July 1rst to fill out and submit VA Form 10-8678 to your prosthetic department of your VAMC to be paid for that year, if approved. If you file after July 1rst and are approved, then payment will be made the following year, which is generally end of August.

The lady who processes Clothing Allowances at MY VAMC say they will pay, when they have funds. After August 1, 2011.

want to say thank you so much for your help.had me a little perturbed there for a while thinking i missed the date until i saw your correction(good for a laugh today needed it) i will get the form to prosthetics asap before the july 31st (lol).

thank you for the response.my brace is for a service connected disability i`m rated 20% for it, back strain. thank you for clearing up the time frame as well, i was wondering whether it was too soon since i was issued the brace in feb 2011. now that you were able to clarify the issue i will go ahead and file.

has anyone ever gotten approved for clothing allowance for being issued a back brace. i was issued mine back in january 2007 but didn't no anything about this. i was refitted today for a new back brace as well as i fill out the clothing allowance form and turned it into the prosthetic department. how long after that do you get a response and if approved, when will you see your first payment.

You should hear back in a short period if you are approved, this is all run on a local basis at your VAMC by the prosthetic department. In any event the VA only pays the clothing allowance out one time per year, this is normally in the late August, early September time frame. This year there is a new wrinkle, if you have two braces that are on different parts of your body you may qualify for a second clothing allowance. If you have a back brace and say one of those unloading hinged knee braces, you would for sure qualify for the 2nd. Ask the guy in your brace/prosthetic department, they will know for sure. this also applies to creams, etc...that stain or ruin clothing as well if that applies. Also ask them to see if your condition is static, if so, they may be able to rate you that way right off the bat and you will not have to apply again it will be done automatically for you every year. i called the prosthetic dept today and the lady told me that my claim was processed yesterday and that i will get a letter within the next 30 days. she never said it was denied or not. should i call back to see if it was denied or approved ?

I am anxiously await to see weather I get paid or not it is now Aug 17, 2011
I never received any letter from the VA saying approved or denied ?
However I did file in January 2011 never heard anything so I had the guy at the local VA prost send a form again VA StPetersburg called and told me I didnot have to file each year and that I would be paid late August early Sept-what letter are you all talking about ?
I sure I hope I get it-if not it would be a whole nother year.
And I wear swift lock ankle braces on both feet-20% each

I have been considered "static" since last year and the VA office in Lake City said that they would be paying out clothing allowance beginning 1 Sep.

hey is that what they meant-they called and left a message and I called back-they said I did not have to apply every year-I got no paperwork-do I get paid once or for both ankles-I wear prostetics on both ?

Check out your initial clothing allowance award letter. If it says you are static, that means you don't have to apply for the brace/support that you were awarded the clothing allowance for.

As far as the second one, if you have not requested an additional clothing allowance for a second brace/support, I would recommend you do so. I did last year, and it was approved with static, but of course we are still waiting on the approval of, and pay for the additional clothing allowances.

i filed for the second clothing allowance over two years ago, and I am still waiting for some kind of answer.. I even request a denial and statement of the case, and the audie murphy has not responded except to tell me last Aug my clothing allowance ( 1st one) is static,,. hell its been static since 1999...
