Posts: 41 Sep 7 10 8:40 AM	This might get interesting in the Agent Orange arena. Had an appointment with the VA urology surgeon to discuss treatment options for a small cancerous tumor in my prostate. With a Gleason score of 6, I agreed with him that a "wait and see" approach at this time would probably be OK. Then he added, in writing, that even if the cancer was larger and/or more aggressive, he wouldn't operate or recommend any treatment because of my IHD. So what might a rater do with this mess? Continue 100% until I croak? Down grade the rating by ignoring cancer and rate on residuals (I have some)? Or find something else in the ratings book that might apply? I'm reading everything I can find on prostate cancer, have read a lot about IHD, haven't found much that combines the two. Getting a 2nd opinion is on my current things to do!

Posts: 4561 Sep 7 10 8:56 AM	Second opinion. Especially about the not operating or treatment. My husband's prostate test at the VA was 4.5, he went to a private doctor and took a more sophisticated test and it was lower. No treatment now, check back for another test in a year.

I agree.....2nd opinion is always good. I can't imagine why IHD would stop treatment.

Posts: 75 Sep 7 10 9:13 AM	When I broke my leg and they had to do surgery to place a plate they only anasthetic they would allow was a spinal because of my IHD. It could be purely based on Medical reasons. also depending on your IHD level the stress of some things like surgerys can rule them out as too dangerous as compared to the benefits.... a part of severe IHD that has to be lived with.

I realize that severe IHD may stop surgery and that is why I stated that I don't know why it would stop treatment. There are several ways to deal with prostate cancer and radiation treatments are one of them. Certainly something can be done opposed to not doing anything.

Posts: 41 Sep 7 10 11:19 AM	Some of the things the doctor talked about make sense, I think. Got stents in my left interior and right iliac arteries. That's real close to the prostate so external radiation might fry the artery from the inside out. The seeds might be OK but he seems to think that I'm not bad enough yet. My IHD would probably be called severe. Whenever I go in for another stent, the operating room folks are put on standby. I guess that would be the same for prostate surgery, which costs extra but it sure feels good knowing there's a backup plan. It'll be interesting to see what the raters figure on this.

Posts: 23 Sep 8 10 6:11 PM	I was diagnosed with Liver Cancer a few months ago, normally they would cut out the tumor, but won't do it because of the IHD. The reason was that there is a good chance that I wouldn't survive the surgery due to the anesthesia to do the surgery. I think it depends on the condition of your heart when they decide operate or not. I chose the chemoebolization for the tumor, as it is target just to the tumor and not the whole body. So far so good.

I must admit the various surgeons and cardiologist had several discussions about it. I had bypass in 1998 and it didn't turn out too good, there is nothing else they can do unless it gets worse, then they would try something "funky" their words not mine. I guess I should add that after the last CHF I ended up on oxygen 24/7 because of pulmonary hypertension. I included that as secondary to IHD in the last claim, will see what happens. I also put in for DMII "AGAIN". I filed in 2000 for IHD and DMII and received compensation at 60%, not service connected, but because of income. They stopped the 60% when I took early retirement in 2008, but never received anything for the DMII, even after it was put on the presumptive list in 2001. Will see what they do this time, if they don't pick it up, I will file an appeal.

I was just showing that I was denied surgery on the liver, because of the IHD, I added the other things to show that everyone is different with IHD and some will be denied because of it and some might not be denied. I really don't think it is because of the IHD being added to the presumptive, but the over all health of the person that needs the surgery.
